Finally played Paper Mario

So, after all these years I finally downloaded Paper Mario for the Virtual Console last week to play for the first time, upon CuccoLady's suggestion. I've played both sequels to the game, but I never actually played this for the N64. (I did, however, purchase a strategy guide for the game when it first came out... mainly because I was bored and wanted some Mario reading material.)

I beat the game tonight. The verdict? A good, solid Mario RPG, which did a good job of setting the ground for future games. A couple of random thoughts and rants:
  • So... did Bowser just march right into the Star Sanctum and take the Star Rod, while the Star Spirits just sat there and watched? I mean, they were right there, why didn't they stop him or anything? I just... don't get that.
  • Who would win in a fight between Jinx and the Dojo Master? While the Master might have apprentices with slightly cooler names than Jinx's (Jackie CHAN and Bruce LEE as opposed to Mick JAGGER), Jinx just kicked the ass out of the Master's bland personality. And Jinx was tiny, and his dojo was like twice as big as the Master's. Also, at least Jinx gave you something useful for beating him. The Master literally just gave you a ****ing piece of paper.
  • What was up with Twink's animation? Was he chewing something?
  • CURSE YOU, GRIND-PROOF STAR POINTS!
  • Okay, so Tubba Blubba was big and mean for a while to the Boos of Gusty Gulch. But this was only because when he was a regular, UNinvincible little Clubba, he was bullied and picked on by by the Boos for being a weakling. So Bowser comes and makes Tubba Blubba invincible, and he gets a little revenge on the Boos for tormenting him, and ooh, look who can't stand the heat! Yeah, Tubba Blubba was working for Bowser and had the Star Spirit captive, but like he said, he was just a real softie deep inside. And what did the Boos do when the Star Spirit escaped? They did the exact same thing Bowser did and captured him, not even letting him free until Mario agreed to help shuffle them out of their karma. And when Tubba Blubba was returned to normal? The Boos probably went back to bullying him. Bow even jokes about it. That bitch. What kind of moral is that?
  • The Mayor of Shiver City's wife is a ****.
  • The end credits and parade were just like in Super Mario RPG, right down to the fireworks at the end. Yeah, I know, they did that as a homage, but still, it left me thinking, eh... couldn't've done something different? Also, when Mario and Peach walked off together alone to Mario's house, I thought they were planning on starting some fireworks of their own, IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

So, all in all, Paper Mario was a fun romp around, and worth the download. I wouldn't put it up against Super Mario RPG or either of the Paper Mario sequels, but it was still plenty of fun. Also, you could tell the storytelling got a lot better by The Thousand-Year Door. Anywho, good game. Lots of fun. Thanks for pressuring me to get around to play it, CL.

Shiver City and the Ice Palace is still one of my favorite levels in any game. I love that whole part.

Getting giant turtles to empower you is not an answer to bullying: only you yourself can fix that. Or, an eye for an eye makes nothing happen.

Same here. It combines 3 of my favorite things: detective stories, Super Mario Bros., and penguins.

I thought the whole game was very easy.

I think the only time I died was the first time I fought the Anti Guy. I was a little unprepared for that.

Paper Mario is awesome. I hated the flower place, though.

Jinx!

And my favorite part was Shiver City as well. In TTYD, the train was my favorite part. Great games.

My favorite part was the mansion in PM, but the Gulch and Tubba's Castle were annoying.

A lot of TTYD was annoying, but it was overshadowed by the rest of the greatness. I also liked the optional boss battle at the end of the tunnels (ya know, the ones that go down 100 levels). Good challenge.

I don't know why, but I remember liking the whole Dry Dry Desert/Dry Dry Ruins thing the best with the Gusty Gulch thing and Shiver City a close second.

It must be due to some nostalgia from my tweens (or some damn catchy music).

Paper Mario is my absolute favorite game of all time and space. Personally, the first game was my favorite, even though the next two had superior graphics, gameplay, and storyline. I guess maybe it's because I was a kid back then...

I liked the Toy Box for some reason.

Does that make me a freak?

yes The Toy Box was intresting, but having to enter/re-enter the box was annoying. I never liked it much.

Anti-Guy FTW.

There was a member here named Anti Guy once.

Oh wait, that was probably one of Antisocial's pdns.

Also, Huff n' Puff annoyed me. Also the lack of a post-endgame playability. Also also, TTYD totally beats this and SPM for storytelling.

Lavalava island is made of pure ****ing win, no getting around it.

Yet, Gusty Gulch has awesome music.

Choices, choices.

Gusty Gulch had good music. So did Shooting Star Summit. And Jade Jungle, sorta.

Most everything else was ehh.

^^ Yeah Lava Lava island was my favorite area as well. I enjoyed adventure with Kolorado, the 'tuna', and the annoying egg guy.

I also thought the third chapter was cool with Tubba Blubba and all.

I second that. Such a cruel person that only cared about her own ass.

It is an annoying level in all respects, IMO, but it was unique at least.

Huff n' Puff was a BIIIIIIIIITCH. I think he was the first boss to kill me. Although it's easier now, because I have a strategy to kill the small clouds before he could eat them. And I hated his lightning attack. The wind was easy to avoid damage.
