Each week I'll spotlight a different inhabitant of the Mario universe, and we can have a discussion about that particular character. Our first Character of the Week is............ Wario ![]() First Appearance: Super Mario Land 2 (Game Boy, 1992) Latest Appearance: Wario Land: Shake It! (Wii, 2008) Wario made his debut as the arch-nemesis of Super Mario Land 2 and, thanks to his larger-than-life personality, promptly gained a fan following and begat his own franchise of diverse and wacky games that range from action-adventure to puzzler to...having to swat a fly really fast or something. And starting with Mario Kart 64, the big lug became a prime fixture of Mario's all-star multiplayer cast, appearing in nearly every Kart, Party, and sports title since. In many ways, Wario is the anti-Mario; the Bizarro Mario; Mario's unchecked id run amok. Where Mario is chubby, Wario is obese. Where Mario is cheerful, Wario is manic. Where Mario is heroic and altruistic, Wario is selfish and mean-spirited. But, though Wario is certainly a big, fat, gluttonous jerk, he's not evil. He's not a bad guy in the same way that Bowser is. This gives us permission to like him, and even sympathize with him. Whether Wario is hunting for treasure, racing a go-kart, or serving as the CEO of his own software company, he's always good for a laugh. |
