Cranky Kong First Appearance: Donkey Kong Country (Super NES, 1994) Latest Appearance: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, 2008) When Rare was licensed by Nintendo to resurrect the defunct Donkey Kong franchise, they made some changes; some BIG changes. And Cranky Kong is the living personification of those changes. By way of informing gamers that Donkey Kong Country would not be "their father's Donkey Kong", a whole new generation was introduced. A hipper, younger gorilla leapt into the DK role, and the DK famous for throwing barrels at Mario during the 1980s was presented as an old man; a bearded, cane-wielding curmudgeon named Cranky Kong, who constantly complained (to anyone who would listen, as well as to anyone who wouldn't) about the decadence and watered-down gameplay of modern video games. Thus was born one of the most amusing and endearing inhabitants of the Mario universe, and Cranky has gone on to appear in virtually every DK title since, offering his unique and often hilarious brand of personal wisdom to us spoiled youngsters, whether we like it or not. |
