What do YOU think kills Mario when time runs out in a SMB level?

I started thinking about this after being caught out a few times in NSMB. I thought I'd put the question to VGF.

Mario is actually a normal guy suffering from heart disease (he's obviously overweight, and all that pasta can't help). His doctors have given him exactly 300 seconds to live, but he can extend his lifespan by visiting one of several clinics (which look just like castles), and if he can reach the world-renowned physician (who looks like a princess), he can be cured of his heart disease.

When he dies after you time out in a level, it's actually because he's suffered a fatal heart attack.

The mushrooms give weird fungi feelings to his stomach, so if he doesn't get it out by sliding down the flagpole, he will eventualy die.

That's the time he has to make it to the castle to save the princess in. He doesn't make it in time, Toadstool gets axed. Literally.

It's because they take the flag down in exactly 300 seconds, so he has to get there in time to slide down.

Mario has a condition that causes him to completely lose his memory for 299 out of every 300 seconds. He remembers that he left his stove on whenever that 300th second arrives, so he quickly falls through the ground to get to his secret underground stove bunker.

The only way to prevent Mario from remembering his own stove is to get him inside a castle or pipe, because they are actually warehouses for some of the many stove smugglers in the Mushoom Kingdom. These stoves are all left on, naturally.

Mario has exactly 9200 seconds until Bowser executes the princess. If he doesn't keep up a pace of <300 seconds per level, he loses all hope of reaching her in time & dies of grief.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Shouldn't he build up a sort of credit for finishing levels early?

There is no credit for those who oppose the dictator.

His mom keeps urging him to use his roll over seconds but Mario likes to use the new ones instead.
