Super Mario RPG (Super NES, 1996)
Developed by Squaresoft under the guidance of producer Shigeru Miyamoto,
Super Mario RPG was something truly special when it first came out, and remains so even today. With a broader, more epic scope than any Mario game before or since (and indeed, more than most other Nintendo games, period), it was a spectacle to behold. If Mario's games can be likened to Disney animated masterpieces, then
SMRPG was
Beauty and the Beast with its level of exploration, emotion, and intrigue unprecedented in the franchise. The game introduced a bevy of memorable and endearing characters to the Mario universe (Geno, Mallow, Booster, Smithy, Valentina, and so many others), and did some truly exciting things with the old stand-bys. Everybody who was playing games at that time should remember how exciting it was to finally see Mario and Bowser team up!
Though it has no direct sequel,
SMRPG inspired an entire franchise of Mario-themed RPGs, including the Paper Mario games for N64 and GCN, and the "Mario & Luigi" trilogy for GBA and DS. It was the final Mario game released for the Super NES.
