She was basically a Princess Toadstool clone in a yellow dress, however, and after serving as Luigi's caddy in 1991's NES Open Tournament Golf, she faded into obscurity. In 1993's Super Mario Bros. feature film, Daisy (played by Samantha Mathis) popped up as the leading lady and Luigi's love interest. (Her inclusion in the film was most likely for reasons of superficiality rather than substance, however; unlike Princess Toadstool, Daisy actually had a normal name. If Daisy had not been created for Super Mario Land in the first place, then the filmmakers likely would have simply renamed Princess Toadstool. Heck, maybe they would have called her Princess Pauline.) Say what you want about the movie, but this portrayal of the Daisy character was the portrayal that launched a thousand fan fictions; from 1993 onwards, despite Nintendo's continued neglect of Daisy, the yellow-clad princess would be universally accepted among Mario fans as Luigi's answer to Mario's semi-romantic relationship with Princess Toadstool. Princess Daisy made her big comeback with 2000's Mario Tennis for N64. Nintendo, anxious to differentiate her from Princess Toadstool, modified several aspects of her character. They changed her hair color and style, altered her classic facial features, and described her as being a "tomboy", whereas Princess Toadstool had always been more of a "girly-girl". This new Daisy proved very popular, and the B-list monarch from Sarasaland has gone on to feature in virtually every Kart, Party, and sports title since, becoming more and more developed with each appearance. (She was even given her own Baby incarnation in Mario Kart Wii.) As Daisy is given more and more exposure, Nintendo seems to have finally caught up to what the fans had decided long ago, and is now growing increasingly open to the idea of portraying Luigi and Daisy as a couple (or at least to the extent that Nintendo is comfortable portraying any two characters as a couple, anyway); not only have they been partnered up in various sports titles, but check out the fountain on Mario Kart Wii's Daisy Circuit. |
