King K. Rool
First Appearance:
Donkey Kong Country (Super NES, 1994)
Latest Appearance:
Mario Super Sluggers (Wii, 2008)
With Rare's rebooting of the Donkey Kong character in 1994 came DK's own answer to Mario's Bowser; a similarly stubborn reptilian tyrant named King K. Rool. A crocodile-like creature whose default outfit consists of a red cape, a golden chest plate, and a crown that doubles as a deadly boomerang, K. Rool's first caper revolved around the pilfering of Donkey Kong's prized horde of bananas. It's never made clear why K. Rool and his army of reptilian Kremlings would covet a huge collection of bananas, nor is K. Rool's unbridled hatred for the Kong family ever adequately explained. It is clear, however, that K. Rool is more or less off his rocker; he entertains towering delusions of grandeur, does ridiculously flamboyant things for no apparent reason, and seems to possess multiple personalities (he returned in
DKC 2 as the pirate Kaptain K. Rool, and again in
DKC 3 as mad scientist Baron K. Roolenstein).
King K. Rool continues to serve as the bane of Donkey Kong's existence to this day, playing the villain in virtually every DK-starring game. 2005's
DK: King of Swing for the GBA marked K. Rool's first appearance as a playable character, and 2008's
Mario Super Sluggers for the Wii saw him appear for the first (and hopefully not the last) time as a playable character in a Mario sports title.
