Super Mario Kart (Super NES, 1992)

Receiving tremendous heaps of praise and adulation upon its debut, Super Mario Kart was notable for its groundbreaking gameplay and revolutionary Mode 7 graphics (first seen in 1991's F-Zero). The game single-handedly originated the kart-racing genre of video games. It also originated Nintendo's tradition of producing sports and party games starring Mario characters, which has since allowed the Mario franchise to become the most profitable and prolific in the industry. It is the third best-selling game for the Super NES, and is commonly regarded as that system's best multiplayer experience.

Great game, except for the turning and computers cheat almost as badly as Mario Kart Wii(I finally got another copy to replace the one my nephew(s) broke. 36 bucks!)

Actually, the original Super Mario Kart is my least favorite of the series. Maybe it's because I didn't actually get a chance to play it until after I'd already played Mario Kart 64, but to me the SNES game seems bland and difficult to control.

Aside from the sketchy controls, this was a fun game to play. I'm not sure how I'd rank it in the series, but I'm waiting for it to be released on the VC so I can play it again.

^I heard that Super Mario Kart is one of the most requested titles for the VC, but I also heard that it hasn't been released on the VC because Nintendo was having trouble with the emulating of the Mode 7 graphics.
