Lightbulb Designing an "all-Mario" version of Super Smash Bros.

This is just a little something I've been kicking around in my spare time. Mario's universe (and yes, that includes all Wario and DK games too) is so expansive and colorful that it could easily serve as the sole venue for a Super Smash Bros. game all its own. Using SSB Brawl as a template, I've been brainstorming possibilities for Mario-related characters, stages, items, Assist Trophies, etc. I thought I'd post what I had so far, and if anyone else has any cool ideas, please feel free to chime in.

I'll start off with the Assist Trophies and Items I've cooked up so far, and post some more stuff a bit later:

Assist Trophies

Kat & Ana - Same as in Brawl

Lakitu & Spinies - Same as in Brawl

Hammer Brother - Same as in Brawl

Cranky Kong - Replaces Mr. Resetti (Perfect, right?)

Orbulon - From the WarioWare series; flies above the battlefield in his pig-shaped ship and drops items

Genie - From Wario Land; floats above the stage like a blimp, zapping players with a jolt of electricity from his fingers

Klap Trap - Runs back and forth across the stage, biting whoever gets in its way; behaves a bit like the Pokemon Piplup in Brawl, but with biting instead of pushing, and doesn't run blindly off the edge of the stage to its doom

Fawful - Flies over stage, shooting red and green fireballs from his helmet

Lob - From Mario Clash; an iron box on wheels that appears in the background and hurls iron balls at players in the foreground

Lady Bow - Follows players and repeatedly slaps them; a bit like the Metroid in Brawl, but with slapping instead of sucking

Flurrie - Generates a strong wind that blows all other players (kind of like Whispy in the Kirby stages)

Items

All Mario-related items from the SSB series would return, along with the addition of the following:

Coconut Cannon - From Donkey Kong 64; replaces Cracker Launcher

POW Block - When thrown, it shakes the ground, bouncing and damaging all players touching the ground

Pure Heart - From Super Paper Mario; replaces Heart Container

Honey Syrup - Replaces Maxim Tomato

Cookies - From Yoshi's Cookie; replaces Food

Jet Helmet - From Wario Land; replaces Bunny Hood

Watermelon - From Yoshi's Island; lets player spit watermelon seeds at other players

Star Rod - From Paper Mario; replaces Kirby's Star Rod

Orange Grenade - From Donkey Kong 64; an orange that bounces along the ground a few times, then explodes

Vitamin Capsule - From Dr. Mario; replaces the ordinary Capsule; items are inside

"!" Box - From Super Mario 64; replaces the ordinary Crate; items are inside; comes in red, yellow, and blue

Recurring Mario items would, of course, include:

Super Mushroom
Poison Mushroom
Fire Flower
Starman
Bob-Omb
Barrel Cannon
Springboard
Metal Box
Soccer Ball
Hot Head
Green Koopa Shell
Red Koopa Shell
Freezie
Hammer
Golden Hammer
Banana Peel
Lightning Bolt
Assist Trophy
Smash Ball

Thoughts so far?

MARRY ME.

What is this anyway? Are you going to make this, or is it just one of those "full-length ideas"?

It's a full-length idea, though it's pretty cool.

Just a pipe dream, I'm afraid. I can barely work a calculator, so I'm nowhere near capable of actually creating a video game for real.

Stages

All Mario-related stages from Melee and Brawl would appear, and I've also brainstormed the following ideas:

Bowser's Castle - Thwomps, lava, you know the sort of thing

Gangplank Galleon - K. Rool's pirate ship, complete with cannon firing at the players; sort of like Toon Link's stage in Brawl, but bigger

Space Zone - From Super Mario Land 2

Crocodile Cauldron - Hot, lava-filled stage based on the area in DKC 2

Inside Bowser - Inspired by Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story; you just know this would make an awesome stage

Booster Tower - From SMRPG; what couldn't you do with this stage?

Smithy Factory - From SMRPG

Airship - From SMB 3

Sherbet Land - Icy stage based on the area from Wario Land

Future Fun Land - The Wizpig's home planet in Diddy Kong Racing; kind of like one of the F-Zero stages, but wackier

Flipside - From Super Paper Mario; this stage would continuously flip back and forth between 2-D and 3-D, constantly changing the limits of the stage and disorienting the players

SSB Brawl has 35 playable characters (counting Zelda/Shiek, Samus/Zero Suit Samus, and Pokemon Trainer all as one character apiece), so I've been trying to come up with an equal number of characters for this Mario version. This is what I've been able to brainstorm so far:

Mario
Luigi
Toad
Princess Toadstool
Yoshi
Bowser
Bowser Jr.
Wario
Waluigi
Koopa Troopa
Shy Guy
Rawk Hawk (from Paper Mario: TTYD)
O'Chunks (from Super Paper Mario)
Mallow
Geno
Jinx
Baby Mario
Prince Peasly (from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)
Dr. Crygor (from WarioWare series)
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Tiny Kong
Lanky Kong
King K. Rool
Kritter (or Krunch from Diddy Kong Racing)

Any other ideas?

Jimmy, Toad, Boshi, and Paper Mario are some character ideas.

Ideas for stages would be: Hall of Hieroglyphs, Beanbean Kingdom, Tick Tock Clock, Cosmic Observatory, and a board from Mario Party.

Thumbs up

A Mario Party-themed stage would 0wn, yes. Tick-Tock Clock is a great idea too. Lots of potential there.

Where's Chunky Kong? Seriously, there's not much big bruisers in the Mario series(or DK and Wario Land/Ware). Also, no babies, they're freaking annoying and stupid clones when used, especially in games like Mario Kart. I do like Paper Mario, though.

Yes, Mario's paper-ized incarnation would make a good character, and he wouldn't even have to be a clone of regular Mario; the Paper Mario games have given the character enough moves and attacks to be used uniquely.

In the end, I wasn't sure if Chunky Kong could turn out too differently from Donkey Kong.

And like SM64, maybe it could move at different speeds depending on the time of day.

Would Funky Kong possibly work? Although I see all of the apes as being clones with differences, like Falco and Wolf.

Awesome idea. Like at 3:00 it could be slowed down, at 9:00 it could be sped up, and at 12:00 it could be stopped completely.

Nintendo is always throwing little gems and Easter eggs like that into the SSB games. The details make it that much more interesting.

In picking which Kongs to include as playable characters, I tried to choose the ones that would justify themselves the most. Obviously Donkey and Diddy had to be in there. I chose Tiny over Dixie because Donkey Kong 64 gives Tiny a lot of versatility and diversity in her attacks and maneuvers, and I chose Lanky Kong because I thought his quirky weirdness would make for an interesting and unique character.

Rosalina may make a good assist trophy. She would work much the same way as she did in Galaxy: If the trophy releaser falls off the edge, Rosalina would carry them back to the last ground they touched.

^ I always pictured her waving her wand and making star bits fall from the sky, hitting people. Like the Unown, but with more knockback and damage.

Also, baby characters would work. See?

Well, Giga Bowser is playable, albeit only as a Final Smash and it worked...
