Cool Character of the Week #12

Tatanga

First Appearance: Super Mario Land (Game Boy, 1989)
Latest Appearance: Super Mario Land 2 (Game Boy, 1992)

Tatanga is the mysterious space alien who invaded Sarasaland and kidnapped Princess Daisy in Mario's first Game Boy adventure, Super Mario Land. Three years later he returned in a cameo appearance in Super Mario Land 2, serving as the boss of the Space Zone. He has not been seen since, though he remains a favorite among Mario's hardcore fans. Personally, I think it would be really cool if Tatanga served as the major villain of the next big Mario RPG. Since those villains tend to be one-shot characters with supernatural or otherworldly origins, a Mario RPG would be a perfect comeback vehicle for Tatanga.

At the peak of Super Mario Land's popularity, Valiant Comics published a series of comic book stories featuring battles between Mario and Tatanga. In these stories, Tatanga and his minions would continuously escape from a Super Mario Land game pak, and some kid would have to bring Mario out of the game as well in order to combat them. The center picture above shows Tatanga as he was portrayed in these comics.
