Character of the Week #14

Funky Kong

First Appearance: Donkey Kong Country (Super NES, 1994)
Latest Appearance: Mario Super Sluggers (Wii, 2008)

Introduced in Donkey Kong Country, Funky Kong is a happy-go-lucky surfer dude, and a fixture of Donkey Kong Island. He is extremely laid back, and doesn't particularly care for action and adventure; he prefers instead to sit on the sidelines and offer helpful services to the other, more heroic Kongs like Donkey and Diddy as they go about thwarting King K. Rool's various nefarious schemes. In the first two DKC games, he operated his own airlines, allowing the Kongs to revisit areas they'd already cleared. In DKC 3, he provided the Kongs with a fleet of boats necessary to explore the Northern Kremisphere. And in Donkey Kong 64, he outfitted the Kongs with fruit-based weaponry. He made his debut as a playable character in the multiplayer mode of DK: King of Swing for GBA, and was still playable in DK: Jungle Climber for DS and Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast for Wii. He has also been appearing in Mario sports titles recently, including Mario Kart Wii and Mario Super Sluggers.

On the CGI Donkey Kong Country TV show that ran from 1998 to 2000, Funky was depicted with tan fur, a Jamaican accent, and a firm belief in the cosmic principle of karma. In other words, yup, he was a black guy.
