(NES, 1985) Latest Appearance: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii & DS, 2009) Goombas (originally known by the full moniker of "Little Goombas") have plagued Mario since his early days, and they number amongst his most infamous and recognizable foes. They're described as "traitors to the Mushroom Kingdom", and though Nintendo has never bothered to elaborate on this, it is not difficult to hazard a guess as to the motive behind their treachery; they do, after all, appear to be less evolved and less sophisticated than the more humanoid residents of the Mushroom Kingdom. Perhaps they were treated as second-class citizens and believed that King Bowser might offer them a better deal? Well, as it turned out, they were mistaken, as the Goombas in Bowser's army are about as low down on the totem pole as they can get, and are often deployed as "stomp fodder" for Mario and Luigi. Those little brown fungi are known for their stubborn persistence, however, and boy, do they ever keep coming back for more. In the 1993 Super Mario Bros. feature film, Goombas were portrayed as large, trenchcoated lizards with lots of muscle but very few brains. They seemed to be the cornerstone of King Koopa's personal guard. Last edited by Metal Mario; 11-05-2009 at 03:51 AM. |

Goombas are awesome. I can't believe that some people couldn't tell that they were both Fungi(Goombas and Toads, I mean). That's why an deevolved Toad turning into a Goomba made perfect sense in the movie. I still thought that there were only two problems with the movie anyway...the crappy way they defeated Koopa, and the fact that the fungus didn't dissapear when King Toadstood(or whatever his name was, I forget) turned back to normal. |

Evidence for that theory is in SPM, when you first play as Luigi in Castle Bleck. Two Goombas are there to help you, but when they get caught, the Goombas immediately defected from Bowser's army over to Count Bleck. Then again, the Goombas in Bowser's Inside Story do seem to be die-hard devotees of Bowser, but maybe that's 'cause they were in a cage. Besides, those three minions (the ones that helped out with the whole Banzai Bill thing) also betrayed Bowser, throwing him into a safe and all. Last edited by Gabriel; 11-05-2009 at 08:37 AM. |
