Character of the Week #17

Rosalina

First Appearance: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007)
Latest Appearance: Mario Kart Wii (Wii, 2008)

A mysterious, enigmatic, and seemingly immortal visitor from the stars, Rosalina watches over the boundless universe from her home upon her traveling Comet Observatory. Though once just an ordinary girl, she fulfilled her destiny when she journeyed into outer space and became the adoptive mother of the race of star-like creatures called the Lumas.

Rosalina went on to appear as a playable character in Mario Kart Wii. It is not yet known if she will return for next year's Super Mario Galaxy 2, but, with a deeper and more interesting back story than most other Mario characters, the fans would surely give Nintendo sufficient license to bring her back.

For those of you unfamiliar with Rosalina, or for those who would simply like to get to grips with the intimate details of her emotional biography, I've posted the complete storybook from Super Mario Galaxy below. (Keep some tissues handy.)

Rosalina = Peach.

It is unusual she has such an extensive background, since most of the main characters have almost none.

It would seem that Princess Toadstool is more or less Nintendo's basic prototype for female characters.

I hear that Rosalina was originally to be a relative of Peach.

Rosalina is a pretty cool character, and it was pretty interesting that Nintendo decided to give her a very cemeneted history and origin, especially since they rare seem to do that for many of their Nintendo characters. And it was a very touching story as well, so extra points for that.

For what it's worth Rosalina is a good and interesting character, although a little bland and she really hasn't done much yet. I mean she is the caretaker of the stars, but really all she does usually is hover and give instructions . . . so its hard to comment on her really, she just hasn't made that much of an impact to be given a really good comment yet, I suppose. As I said her character is a little bland right now. (generic princess)

Wasn't Daisy supposed to be Peach's cousin?

Speaking of Daisy, doesn't it seem the of the Princesses seem to be loosely based on a major item from the Super Mario Bros. series? Peach is based on the super mushroom, Daisy is based on the fire flower, and now Rosalina is based on the super star . . . what's next? Princess Raccoon Tail? (Probabaly Princess Autumn based on the leaf)

Nah, there's no relation between the two.

Never thought of it that way before. Pretty wild.

^Actually, at first I think they were cousins or sisters, but now I don't know. There blood relation is about as clear as the one between Wario and Waluigi.

That's an interesting point. I'd never thought about that before.

I could've sworn it's been officially stated in one way or another that Peach and Daisy are not blood related.

I wish there were more major non-blonde females in Nintendo games. Peach, Zelda, Samus, Rosalina, Cynthia...

^ It's funny. Peach, Zelda and Samus were all originally not blonde. Then eventually all got blondified.

The Japanese don't have natural blonds. It must be a subject of fascination.

Princess Florence? Based on the war nurse Florence Nightengale?

Isn't Zelda a brunette half the time?

The only time I've ever seen Zelda with brown hair was in some very retro promotional art for the original The Legend of Zelda. All the rest of the time she's been blond.

Also note that Rosalina is a distinctly different shade of blond than Princess Toadstool. The Princess is definitely a "yellow blond", whereas Rosalina is...I dunno...semi-platinum?

Zelda has brown hair in I think Twilight Princess and the in Smash Bros. Brawl right?

. . . I guess that isn't really that much, I think she was dirty blond in Link to the Past (of course Link's hair was Pink in that one.)
