I've been thinking about Mario Sunshine, what with Mario Galaxy 2 coming out (relatively) soon, and of course Mario Wii. And I wondered, why exactly is the game so unpopular? Sure there are a lot people who don't like it, but in the end I've heard many people say the same thing, "Its not a bad game." And I guess I agree, its not a bad game, its an ok game, its not fantastic, its not epic, and even though it introduces us to Petey Pirhanna and Bowser Jr. its still not even a very memorable game, but even so . . . why is it such a black sheep in the Mario game universe? I have theory to this, I don't think its because the game is bad, I think its because its not really a Mario game. Other than the fact Mario is in it, ts not really a game that has any real relation to any other Mario game. You don't fight the same way, you don't do the same things, the plot isn't the standard Mario plot (yes, Peach eventually get kidnapped, but its different, and besides, you were going after Bowser Jr anyway before he captures her, so its just an add-on in this case). In the end it could have just as easily been its own character, or even any other character from the Nintendo franchise. It could have been DK, it could even have been Link. Mario doesn't use Mario moves, Yoshi doesn't use Yoshi moves, and other than them, no other characters really appear or effect gameplay at all. Heck, the game may have made for sense if it was a Donkey Kong game, I mean Donkey Kong games usually take place on exotic islands, colorful fruits are normally available, and in the end the game's whole paint in the jungle could even have been a sublte moral for not polluting nature, instead of in Mario Sunshine where that really isn't put across it seems. Anyway, I guess that's my opinion, its just a Mario that isn't a Mario game really, really I don't think it needed to be. |

I think the biggest element that contributes towards its "black sheep" status is the use of the water pack, but I enjoy the gameplay. It was something different. And getting all 120 Shine Sprites is hard. |

Moving around and jumping... the gravity is off. __________________ /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ WON’T YOU BECOME A MAGICAL GIRL? |

I think I'd like FLUDD better if it didn't talk. I think I'd like Yoshi better if it didn't dissolve. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Mario also has no standard means of attacking in place (i.e. punching). I was also wondering what the hell they did with all the signature enemies. The Bullet Bills look like they were designed for a circus, all the Boos look disturbingly stoned, and Bob-ombs--I assume these were Bob-ombs--were literally giant wind-up toys with a digital face. I presume they were implying a different species of these enemies, since it's way out on Isle Delfino, but Jesus Christ. (At least Monty Moles survived this design overhaul.) When I heard Bowser Jr. call Peach his "mama", I ****ing lost it. |

I mean, Sunshine was a good game, but it wasn't as great as 64 was. I think there might've been a bit of dissapointment there. Also, the voice acting was bad (not to mention synching it to the characters talking). |

Every level was tropical paradise in some way, shape or form--I mean, the mario series has been good on that since SMB1, but they just dropped the ball on it in SMS. |
