Character of the Week #18

Waluigi

First Appearance: Mario Tennis (N64, 2000)
Latest Appearance: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii & DS, 2009)

Just as Wario is Mario's twisted doppelganger, Waluigi is Luigi's reflection in a cracked mirror; cowardly, self-pitying, and comically skinny, he represents that which Luigi might become in a world decidedly less cheerful and friendly than the Mario universe. Waluigi made his debut in 2000's Mario Tennis, and has appeared as a playable character in virtually every Kart, Party, and sports title since. Additionally he served as the main antagonist in 2005's Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, and he appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Regarded as something of a joke character from the very start, Waluigi has long been a perpetual laughing stock among Mario fans, very few of whom ever felt his presence in the Mario universe was necessary to begin with. And yet, paradoxically, the character's popularity has grown over the years, even to the point that his own following of fans now clamors for him to be given his own game (or at least a supporting role in the next Wario Land title). Perhaps it's because Nintendo has gone to such great lengths to integrate him into Mario's supporting cast that the line-up of familiar faces no longer looks complete without him. Or maybe we just like him better than Bowser Jr. But, whatever the reason, we've gotten used to him, and now we're no longer laughing at him; we're laughing with him (most of the time).

I think that the reason for his stance of being a laughing stalk in part comes goofy name that while it makes for a good pun in Japan it doesn't really translate over in the English speaking world.

As for why his fanbase has grown well I'm guessing that part of it is because of his potentale to be some much more that a rail thin Wario retread has been made cleas by the way his personality has been fleashed out over time. Add onto that he is owned by Nintendo who is famus for thier quirky characters and imaginative ideas also shows that there is still plenty of room for him to strech his legs.

I think its the potential for him being a different sort of Mario villain, really, that attracts us to him. Up until now, most if not all of the Mario villains have been big, fat, powerful behemoths, from Bowser, to Wart, to Wario . . . all of them are big brutes that would rather shoulder rush you over a lava pit then anything else.

Waluigi seems more of a snide type of bad guy, we see this in Wario sometimes, but Waluigi doesn't have Wario's brawn to fall back on. He's a skinny, weak, conniving type of villain who needs to be careful, be devious, and overall give us something that we're not really getting from other villains in the series, where he just steals/kidnaps someone and then tries to pound the hero with his fists.

Plus I think there's a nostalgia involved with his character type. I mean look at him, who doesn't see Waluigi and instantly think of the old, over the top bad guys from the days of silent pictures who would kidnap the damsel and tie her to the railroad trap while twiddling his mustache?

Plus like Luigi to Mario, Waluigi would be a good counter to Wario . . . if they ever put them together in the same game.

Super Wario Bros.!

Waluigi: "WAH!? Why am I not in the title?"

Wario: "You're lucky to be here at all!"

Waluigi actually has a bunch of pretty cool moves, more than I thought when we were talking about it in the Simon Belmont thread.

Now yes, he has the thorny wall (Wall-Luigi) but apparently he also is able to use a single purple vine as a whip, pretty cool there.

Also in addition to swimming straight up in the air, Wauigi can also pin at high speeds and use his long legs to generate a mini-tornado to whip the enemy clear across the stage.

He also has very powerful legs, and apparently has a special move in Mario Smash Football called the Drop Rocket technique. Plus he also has been established as being able to stomp people right into the ground as well.

Not a bad arrangement of moves, certainly enough to make a decent Smash character, in my opinion.

One of the reasons not too many like Waluigi could have something to do with how Waluigi was not made by Nintendo specifically, but by Camelot. According to an article in Nintendo Power, Camelot asked if they could create a Wario-like character for Luigi, and Nintendo was okay with the idea.

Although many also see him as a blantant Wario rip-off, and as someone who got shoehorned into the Main Cast.

Still, the potential is there.

I think one of the big reasons people sort of edged away from him was because no matter how you looked at it, he's the clone of a clone.

Luigi is, at least at the start, a clone of Mario, he was just a pallet swap from the first Mario game to be player 2.

Wario is an obvious clone of Mario, supposed to be the evil Mario.

As such, Waluigi is a clone of Wario and Luigi, an evil clone of an already cloned character.

But really, over time he's not really so bad, he does have some of his own motives, his own moves, and he's more then just a blatant copy now . . . well, sorta/almost.

By now, both Luigi and Wario have distanced themselves from Mario quite a bit.

Waluigi needs a lot more development on his own before he gets there.

He's got plenty of ego if the crotch chop taunt from Mario Strikers is any indecation, Working on what Seraphim suggested as his style of villany I could see him making use of Luigi's fear of goshts should the oppertunity present itself.

OK . . . here's my list of moves for a Smash Bros. version of Waluigi:

Normal: Waluigi attacks with the tennis racket, normally a decent speed, can be toggled back to back a larger backhand.

Forward Formal: Waluigi becomes crazy with a Mario Sluggers baseball bat, he''s swing long, hangs to his long arms, and cover a good distance, he can do a three chain combo, swing once, swing again forward, and then once more, an allusion to, of course, three strikes.

Down Normal: Utilizing his gold club, Waluigi will swing hard into the opponent, like the tennis racket, it can be toggled back for a harder hit, but then it has to charge.

Up Normal: Waluigi suddenly has a pair of purple boxing gloves, he'll do quick up jabs, and can charge for a second to do an uppercut instead, jumping slightly into the air to meet any skybound opponents.

Special: Fail Fireball: Waluigi send out a purple fireball, much similiar to Mario's as it looks like it'll bounce, however instead of moving forward, the ball will just land once and poof in a small explosion. An allusion to the Mario Bros. own fireballs, however int he comic relief aspect it fails miserably, but its good for short range and laying down traps since it won't bounce over the opponent again.

Forward Special: Kart Dash: Similar to Wario's forward special where he gets into his bike, Waluigi will get into his kart from the Mario Kart series and be able to drive forward, spine and come back, he can even spin out! There, however, is a chance that the Go-Kart will fail, and it'll stall for a second before comedically exploding in Waluigi's face and anyone else nearby, sending the tires flying out as projectiles, another allusion to his preference to bob-bombs in the series.

Down Special: Oil Spill: Being the owner of a Motor Oil Company, Waluigi isn't against using his company's products wastefully for his moves, as he crotches down and spills an unhealthy amount of motor oil on the ground. Will cause anyone who walks on it or lands on it (including Waluigi himself) to slip and fall for damage.

Up Special: Air Swim: Waluigi will wave his arms and swim though the air, able to make three healthy swim strikes upwards. Although not invulnerable, anyone close enough can be smacked away by Waluigi's gangly arms and legs as he breast strokes upwards to victory!

Throw: Twist Dunk: All of Waluigi are initated by a vine of hsi Wall-Luigi, lashing out like a whip to ensnare the opponent before pulling them back roughly, giving him a good throw reach. The absic of his throws is an allusion to his basketball move the Twist Dunk, where he'll kick himself up into a twister with the opponent before dunking them into the ground.

Up Throw: Drop Rocket: Kicks the opponent into the air and follows, being surrounded by a purple aura before delivering the final powerful kick, a reference to his big kick from the soccer games.

Down Throw: Sparky Sticker: Waluigi shows his playful side in this move, as he slams a Sparky Sticker down onto the opponent's head then laughes as the opponent is shocked mercilessly by the electrical trap, an allusion to his Mario Party favorite weapon.

Final Smash: Wall-Luigi: Waluigi can run around, and anywhere he goes he leaves a thick trail of purple, thorny vines behind him. Not an overly aggressive final smash, it is easy to cover small playing fields completely with these vines, leaving opponent with no where to land and forces to take damage from the spiky plant. A perfect homage to the character, painful and annoying, but doesn't actually go in for the kill.

Taunt 1: Waluigi does his infamous crotch chop, and as an homage to Luigi, it will do very light damage if an opponent is caught in it, making it even more fun to use. "Wahahaha"

Taunt 2: Waluigi's eyes will glow purple, as they did in his initial appearence, as he slams his foot down and accuses the other players of cheating. "You're cheating! Everybody is cheating!"

Taunt 3: Poses with a long stem red rose, an allusion to his taunt in Mario Part 8. "Eh, they're all just jealous!"

According to the Mario wiki, its from the Mario Kart Wii guide:

"Like Wario, Waluigi also runs a company, but he runs a motor oil company. Waluigi can be contacted via the following address: Waluigi, 26 Grimace Lane, Mushroom Kingdom, IMG EEK. The last part is a pun of "I'm geek." "
