Luigi, despite being a simple palette swap of Mario, was still defined as being a different character with a different name. He wasn't just another Mario. He was Mario's brother. Which is why they called the game Mario Bros. The same goes for Toad in the later Mario games. Up until Paper Mario, there was one specific character named Toad, and all the others of his race were just Mushroom People. But, beginning with Paper Mario, Nintendo established the practice of referring to all of Princess Toadstool's subjects as Toads. I'm old-school, so I don't abide by this, just as I still call Princess Toadstool by her original name. Consequently, Toad is the loyal Mushroom Retainer with the red spots and blue vest who shows up in SMB 2, SMRPG, and the sports, Kart, and Party titles. The unnamed Mushroom People in games like SMB, SM 64, and Luigi's Mansion are not Toad. They're just various scattered citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. And the two playable Mushroom People in New SMB Wii aren't Toad either. |

But thanks for your input Metal Mario, I basically wanted to say the same thing about How Mario and Luigi being pallet swaps are in fact different then the new yellow and blue "Toads" in my opinion, but couldn't really find the right words to do so. He'd have to have a shoulder charge attack, for one. More traction on his feet, a life bar of some sort, maybe. It'd be like putting Link, sword and all, in the game, but having him play the same as the Mario Bros. Wario's style of platforming just doesn't suit that of Super Mario Bros. And, as far as I'm concerned, Waluigi isn't even canon. |

Sure, their sizes are radically different than that of Mario and Luigi, but that doesn't really mean anything. |

He just doesn't fit. BTW: Quote:

They weren't called Toads then, though. The first appearance of a character called Toad was SMB 2. Last edited by Metal Mario; 11-16-2009 at 09:11 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost | |

It wasn't until the N64 era that they started mixing the meaning of the two. Given the timeframe of when the confusion began, I suspect that maybe there was never such a distinction in Japan, since it started right around when Nintendo started unifying their storys and much of what had become accepted in NA got overwritten. Even recently, Toadette was stated to be "the" Toad's sister, so there's still some confusion. |

I agree, two Toads is just stupid. Not that I actually like Waluigi, but he and Wario would've been much better in the long run. Not to mention the stupidity of no online co-op. That was a MAJOR oversight... |

Whatever the reason, it is pretty lame. ...I wouldn't mind more than 4 characters, but I guess there's no more than those 4. Oh well, I like the color blue. |
