Your Guide to New and Unfamiliar Enemies from NSMBWii

Because pretty much everyone's gotten their hands on this game and (apparently) beaten it, as a rabid Mario fan, I thought I'd share the descriptions of all those enemies you love to hate, because I know you have those moments where you're like, "I hate those stupid penguin enemies!" or "**** those fire-chain ball things!" or anything of the sort without any knowledge of proper nomenclature. Worry no more for you can now glean from this little guide and curse them with dignity.

Note: Possible spoiler warning. I'm telling you this now because I'm not going to black out this entire guide and look stupid (that ship has sailed).

Now, in no specific order, the returnees:

Fire Chomp
That flying black sphere with the demonic face and the tail of fireballs you remember from SMB3? Yes, that bastard. It's back and still a lot more vulnerable than its heavy-duty cousin, the Chain Chomp. You can stomp it and fireball/iceball it. Unfortunately, it repeatedly respawns, so don't expect to rid yourself of it anytime soon in one stage.

Sledge Bro
Fat Hammer Brothers. You know, the ones from SMB3. They throw their sledges a lot slower than their brethren, and when they crouch before jumping, prepare for the impending shockwave; if you're still grounded, you'll be stunned long enough for him to possibly clip you with a hammer.

Spike Top
Straight from SMW, you can imagine a Spike Top to be a red Buzzy Beetle with a single spike on its top, because that's exactly what it is. Its signature trait is sticky feet, allowing it to crawl walls and ceilings. Unless you've got some ice, a shell, or a couple of friends to Synchro Ground Pound with, you're better off leaving it be.

Podoboo
First, my apologies. Nintendo can't seem to make up its mind with the name of this stupid thing and repeatedly mixes it up with names like "Lava Bubble", but I know now that all in all, it's the Podoboo: The jumping fireball that leaps from lava pools in sporadic intervals, originating from the first SMB. You can take it out with iceballs.

Fire Bar
Yes, the spinning chains of fire from the SMB castles has a name, and yes, I know that technically they're not an enemy but still a staple Mario obstacle. They come in differing lengths and are virtually indestructible. Luckily, they don't appear too often in this game.

Mecha-Koopa
You'll find these on Bowser Jr.'s Airship, acting the same way they did in SMW: Stomp to stun, and tote it around as a weapon. Just make sure you're not holding it still when it reactivates.

Rocky Wrench
Also in the game are the SMB3 airship veterans themselves: Rocky Wrenches. Moles under manholes that pop out of the ground in an attempt to lob wrenches at you. Stomp them into submission. Don't worry; they don't respawn.

Parabeetle
The very name strikes fear in SMB3 fans everywhere. After a long hiatus, Parabeetles still have the same behavior: Flying in a straight line until it bears your weight, during which it rises diagonally upward, allowing you access to higher ground. They've also brought their big brothers, the Heavy Parabeetles, which do the opposite: Stand on them, and they sink. Both beetles do harm on contact from the front, back, and undersides.

Spike
In SMB3, they weren't that bad. They were the little dudes that lurched towards you, regurgitating spiked balls into their hands and then throwing them at you. Unlike then, the spiked balls they throw in NSMBWii are now affected by gravity, making them harder to evade. Their distant relatives, the Rock Spikes, throw their projectiles downward.

Micro Goomba
Tiny Goombas from SMB3. Since Paragoombas no longer drop them, they're less of a threat. They do no harm, but contact will allow them to crawl all over you, hampering your movement and jumping ability. Spin jump to dispose of them should this happen.

Grand Goomba
The antithesis of above, Grand Goombas are giant Goombas, first seen in SMB3. They have a new feature now: Stomp one, and it splits into two normal Goombas.

Venus Fire Trap
If you ever want to launch your expletives at the Piranha Plants that spit fireballs, this is the name you use to refer to the very same ones from SMB3.

Munchers
Dark-colored plants that nip upwards, returning from SMB3. They're stationary, so they basically serve as dangerous terrain. When you first encounter them, they'll be frozen, so be careful with dealing with fireballs of any kind or you may end up making things very difficult for yourself.

Banzai Bill
Giant Bullet Bills, hailing from SMW. Although their greater size is intimidating, they succumb to a single stomp, just like their smaller relatives.

Missile Bill
Flashing Bullet Bills that follow you. Unlike making a single turn in an attempt to clip you like they did in SMB3, the ones in NSMBWii will relentlessly follow you until you take it out. There is also a Banzai Bill variety, which also tracks you but cannot change direction.

Little Mouser
They seemed to have changed a lot since Yoshi's Island, have they? Encountered in Ghost Houses, these things just simply march forward. However, if you take out one Mouser in a group, all the others in its vicinity run away from the threat, coming back once they come onscreen again. Therefore, it's not recommended that you exterminate ones in the middle of a group with a projectile; you'll have a team of rodents rushing you otherwise.

Fire Snake
Jumping chains of fire, returning from SMB3. Take them out with iceballs, if you have them.

Fishbone
The skeletal fish from SMW. When they spot you, their eyes turn red and they make a beeline for you. Luckily for you, they're stupid. Swim out of the way when they attack and they'll crumble upon contacting a wall.

Spiny Cheep-Cheep
Since SMB3, this vicious species of Cheep-Cheep have gotten a lot smarter. When they see you, they'll give chase and will not stop until you've either swam hard and fast enough, or you tag them with a fireball.

Porcu-Puffer
Remember that blue, spiny fish that chased you nonstop on the surface of water in SMW? Well, it's back and this time, it can jump at you. You can exterminate it with fireballs, ice blocks, and shells. And no, you cannot bounce off it with spin jumps.

Urchin
The purple sea urchins from SMW. They either float in place or move in a set pattern. Fireballs will do them in, and when you freeze one, it floats up for a bit, breaks out, falls asleep and sinks, no longer moving. A sleeping Urchin can block pipes shooting currents upward, by the way. Mega Urchins are HUGE cousins of theirs and are indestructible. Fortunately, those are stationary.

Fuzzy
Sorry to disappoint the uninformed, but it's not the white trip-inducing ones from YI. These are the black wire-riding ones from SMW. And they still ride wires. Unlike SMW, they are now vulnerable to fireballs. Freezing them will not stop their movement, but will render them temporary platforms. There is also a Mega version that behaves the same way.

Swooper
Blue bats that were originally green in SMW. They rest on ceilings, awaiting your presence. Then, they dive downward and proceed to try and fly into your face. A single stomp will do one in. On an unrelated note, their eyes glow in the dark. Creepy.

Crowber
Black birds that were featured in this game's predecessor, NSMB. They circle above, then dive at you. A good stomp will rid you of one.

Broozer
Purple ghosts with boxing gloves that also debuted in NSMB. They have the ability to bust through stone blocks and knock barrels rolling forward, of which you'll also have to avoid. Three normal stomps or one ground pound will defeat them.

Amp
The only enemy hailing from SM64, the Amp is an electrified ball with a clownesque face that does nothing else but float in place, hoping for you to collide with it. You can freeze these, surprisingly.

That's enough of that. On to the new enemies, making their debuts in NSMBWii:

Ice Bros.
Hey, look. A new species of Brother. Exciting. They throw iceballs that don't really go far, but still dangerous enough to be considered annoying.

Bulber
Anglerfish enemies that serve as one of your only sources of light at one dark point in the game. They seem to be oblivious to your presence, but since they damage on contact, they qualify as an enemy.

Jellybeam
Luminous jellyfish that shine a beam of revealing light below them as they float up and down. They're dangerous to the touch, but are vulnerable to fireballs/iceballs. Freezing them does not affect their light beams.

Bramball
These enemies are a little iffy to describe. They're spherical enemies with two long, brambly legs that are harmful to the touch, that get around by "rolling" with these legs, cartwheel-style. You follow? Their legs are invulnerable, leaving their bald body for you to target with a stomp or otherwise.

Cooligan
Penguins sporting shades that attack by belly-sliding into you. They usually come sliding with their homies in tow, so when you avoid one, expect more to show. One stomp knocks off their shades and slows them dramatically. A second stomp will finish the job.

Huckit Crab
Small crabs that throw rocks at you. Their projectiles are unique, for fireballs/iceballs do not affect them, but you can stomp them. Speaking of stomping, the crabs themselves are vulnerable to such.

Foo
Small clouds that blow fog, which does nothing else but obscure your vision. You can disperse the harmless fog with spin jumps, but contact with the cloud itself is dangerous, unless you're jumping on it.

King Bill
A GIGANTIC Bullet Bill. They're invulnerable and obviously hard to evade, due to their massive size. Find safe ground or else succumb to the cheapness of its girth.

Okay, I'm done nerding.

I was thinking about posting something like this, but I was too lazy. Thanks for picking up the slack.

You can punch the Bramballs from their bottoms. It makes them drop a coin and change directions.

It seems they got the memo.

They must've heard how people were having so much trouble with the Parabeetle stage back in SMB3, because on another note, stepping on enough beetles in NSMBWii consecutively will net you a free 1-up.

They make great platforms when you freeze them.

Fire Chomps were in Super Mario 64 as well, incidentally. They were stationery, however, and didn't trail chains of fireballs behind them. (If you get up close to those black balls that shoot fireballs at you, you can see a Fire Chomp's face painted on it.)

Para-Beetles have appeared in the Paper Mario games, though they're called Para-Buzzy in those instances.

YeS!
I found the Parabeetles!

They were always one of my favorite enemies. They're even better in this game! They make cute chirping noises and give me lots of lives because they're my friends.
