Item of the Week #2

Boo Mushroom

First Appearance: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007)
Latest Appearance: Same

The Boo Mushroom made its first and only appearance (so far) in Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii console, specifically in the Ghostly Galaxy, Sand Spiral Galaxy, and the Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.

Being one the fewest used Power-Ups in Mario Galaxy, you actually only get to use this item three times during the game, but it is quite a useful item. It allows you to fly very similiar to Bee Mario, except you need to tap the B button each time to gain altitude and there seems to be no limit how high and how long you can fly (although you only use the Boo Mushroom indoors where there is a ceiling in the way). In addition to levitation, Boo Mario can also turn intangible to pass through some walls and obstacles. This makes the suit very easy to move around in, and handles well, although, like most power-ups in Mario Galaxy, Boo Mario is otherwise defenseless, having no attacks. Boo Mario's only two weaknesses seem to be that he attracts normal Boos (who seem to fall in love with him o_O) and if they touch him he de-transforms, similarly, if Boo Mario gets hit with light, just like the Boos in Galaxy, it causes him to lose his powers.

In the end the Boo Mushroom makes only pops up a couple time in the game, but it was still a fun power-up. We've seen Mario turned into a Hammer Bros., put on a Turtle Shell, and even dress up like Bowser before, but this is the first time we've been able to play Mario as a Boo. As of right now there's no word if the Boo Mushroom will make a return in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but I wouldn't be against it showing up and getting to use it again!

Boos are my favorite enemy. I was enthralled to first hear about this. Sucks that you hardly use it.

Just finished playing Boo's Boneyard Galaxy, man I wish they had used the Boo Mushroom more in retrospect. I never 100% the game so I'm trying to see how far I can get, and the crystal walls and fans were a lot of fun to race around in. Would have been neat if they had given Boo Mario an attack too . . . like . . .

. . . like maybe he can swallow an object inside of him and fly around with it in his belly, and when he goes transparent it would drop down and smash whatever is below him! That could have made an awesome fight, first your Boo Mario in the caverns, racing while something is chasing you, like a Bone beast, maybe even Drybones Bowser, and then you need to actually win the boss battle by swallowing weights and dropping them on the skeleton to break it up!

I agree, Boo Mario had good mechanics. Heck my attack would work well for it, since it can levitate without limit, and it worked really well in a 2-D map like in Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.
