Kids were invited to come compete for high scores against 40 child celebrities of the time in ten-minute rounds of the original Super Mario Bros. The winner of the entire tournament was none other than geek culture spokesman Wil Wheaton and, thanks to the Nintendo Fun Club News, we have a photograph! That's Wil on top, posed next to the guy in the totally creepy Mario suit. Below them is Wil's younger brother, Jeremy Wheaton. Not pictured is his sister Amy, who also competed. Wil's score of 239,400 was higher than anyone else's, celebrity or otherwise, and his prize was an NES Deluxe Set (the one with ROB, a Zapper gun, Duck Hunt and Gyromite) and 15 additional games, which I'm pretty sure was the entire library at the time. Among the people who are not as good as Wil Wheaton at Super Mario Bros. is Arrested Development star Jason Bateman (right), seen here with his sister Justine, who was starring in Family Ties at the time. We don't know what Jason's score was, all we know is that Wil Wheaton is better at Super Mario than Jason Bateman. Please feel free to pull out this fact the next time you are at a party. | That is one creepy-ass Mario. |
