Even if a game doesn't actually feature an appearance by Mario himself, it falls under the banner of the Mario Universe if it stars Yoshi, Wario, or any of the Kongs. All of those characters stemmed from Mario. Kirby, however, did not stem from Mario. |

I thought the Tanooki Suit looked interesting, but I always used it the same way as I did the magic leaf. Never found Mario's statue form to be all that useful. The Thwomp Stomp is news to me though. I'm gonna try that out sometime. As I kid, I thought it was some kind of bear. Turns out, it's a raccoon-like creature known for having big balls. Glad that last part's not in the game. |

Honestly I think many American children has no idea what a Tanuki was at the time, its certainly more of a Japanese folklore reference. It may have been the same in reverse if possibly something strictly U.S., like Native American lore or Bigfoot was used instead may have confused the Japanese audience in its origin. Still the Tanooki suit was always a lot of fun, its just too bad, like the Hammer Bros. Suit, and many of the cooler power-ups, its quite rare and only makes a select handful of appearences in the game itself. |
