So, some of you may remember the Top Ten lists I posted in this forum earlier this year, then stopped due to me not having enough time to keep updating them. Well, it's the holiday season now, and since you've all been good little forum-dwellers, I've decided to give you a Christmas present. Twelve, actually. From now until Christmas Eve, I'll be posting one Top Ten list a day, each with a different theme. Post your thoughts here, agree or disagree, and enjoy the holiday. Now, to start off the Twelve Days of Top Tens: The First Day of Christmas: Top 10 Best Spinoff Series So, we have what's considered the "main series" of Mario games, which includes titles like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. These are the standard platforming adventure games that the Super Mario series excels at. But what about all those spin-off series? The sports and party games, the niche games, the games focusing on characters besides the Mario Bros. Which ones have had the greatest impact? This list aims to explain. 10. Mario vs. Donkey Kong ![]() 23 years after the release of Mario's debut arcade title Donkey Kong, Nintendo gave us a new game for the Game Boy Advance which brought back the gameplay of the original and rekindled the rivalry between Mario and his oldest opponent. Mario vs. Donkey Kong stars Mario as he travels through multiple worlds locating keys and Mini-Mario toys, while pursuing the mischievious Donkey Kong. The popular title spawned two sequels (Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis for the DS, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again for the DSi), both of which featured Mario's original damsel in distress Pauline. 9. Mario Party ![]() Released over a decade ago for the Nintendo 64, the original Mario Party came with much acclaim and became one of Nintendo's premier party games. Up to four people could play together, competing with each other for coins and stars in a multitude of unique minigames. The series would extend through ten sequels for the Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Wii and DS, and even two for the arcade. Whether or not the quality of the series has kept steady over time is up to the fan to decide, but regardless, the games are always a blast when you're playing with a friend. 8. Dr. Mario ![]() Released in 1990 for the NES and Game Boy, Dr. Mario was a Tetris-esque puzzle game featuring our hero Mario as (you guessed it) a doctor. The game is played within a large pill bottle partially filled with red, yellow and blue viruses. Dr. Mario has to drop multi-colored pills called Megavitamins into the jar and guide them to the viruses. If four blocks of similarly-colored Megavitamin pieces or viruses are lined up, the whole line will disappear. The stage is completed once all viruses are eliminated from the grid. Dr. Mario has had multiple sequels, the latest being Dr. Mario Online Rx for WiiWare. 7. Mario Sports ![]() The tradition of Mario sports titles began in 1984 with Golf for the NES, which starred our plumber in red as the player. Mario and company would later star in a multitude of sports-themed games which would include more golf games, as well as tennis, baseball, basketball, soccer, and even motocross. Mario even played in the Olympic games alongside former gaming rival Sonic the Hedgehog. What's next? Hockey? Cricket? Professional cup stacking? 6. WarioWare ![]() Certainly one of the oddest branches of the Mario franchise, the WarioWare games (beginning with WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! in 2003) centers on Wario and a cast of colorful characters from Diamond City who develop "microgames". These microgames, which often last only a few seconds, are played in rapid succession, demanding precision and quick thinking from the player. One of the most original, challenging, and humorous game series to date, it has spanned across every Nintendo system since the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, with future titles on the horizon. 5. Yoshi's Island ![]() Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was a pseudo-sequel to Super Mario World released for the SNES in 1995. Often hailed as one of the greatest Mario games ever made, it starred Yoshi and a very, very young Mario on a quest across Yoshi's Island to rescue Luigi from Kamek the Magikoopa. The game received several sequels with varying similarity to it, including Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island DS, and Yoshi Touch & Go. The series has always starred Yoshi, of course, as he ran, swam, transformed, flutter jumped, and ate his way across his home island. 4. Wario Land ![]() The Wario Land series began as a spin-off of the Super Mario Land games with Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 for the Game Boy in 1994. The game starred Wario (naturally) as he travelled across Kitchen Island in search of the treasure stolen from him by the pirate Captain Syrup. The Wario series has grown to feature eight titles, including Wario World and Wario: Master of Disguise. As opposed to simply jumping on enemies like Mario would, Wario's more prone to clobbering them. The Wario Land games also put a special emphasis on collecting treasure, as we all know Wario's very fond of it. 3. Donkey Kong Country ![]() Developed by Rare, the smash-hit 1994 game Donkey Kong Country starred Mario's old nemesis on an adventure of his own, as he set off across Donkey Kong Island with his buddy Diddy Kong, collecting the bananas taken from him by King K. Rool and his Kremling crew. This series would feature some of the most popular titles in the Mario franchise. After Rare was sold to Microsoft in 2002, other developers would work on new games. It's a hot topic whether or not they live up to the standard set by Rare, but are still solid titles on their own. 2. Mario Kart ![]() The famous kart racing series began with Super Mario Kart for the SNES in 1992, and has since received five console sequels and two arcade spin-offs. The games feature a variety of Mario characters as they race across various racing courses, using items to slip up opponents and aim for first place. The series' impact and legacy is definite, and it holds multiple Guinness World Records. Mario Kart Wii is the best-selling racing game of all time. Many other franchises have tried to cash in on the success of the Mario Kart formula, such as Crash Tag Team Racing or Sonic Riders, although none have come close to matching the success of the original console kart racing game. 1. Mario RPG ![]() Mario's been everywhere. He's done adventures, sports, parties... why not RPGs? Beginning with Square's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in 1996, Mario has received a plethora of new RPG titles, including Intelligent Systems' Paper Mario games and AlphaDream's Mario & Luigi games. The games have all received critical acclaim, and have helped flesh out the Mario universe with stories, characters, and locations like no other had before. These games also feature some of the most memorable moments in any Mario game. Who could forget fighting Culex, or exploring the Shy Guy's Toy Box, or the dialogue of characters like Fawful and Francis? Here's hoping Nintendo will keep giving us great games like these in the future. That's the list for today. Check back in tomorrow for the second list of twelve. |

But in the world of Super Mario fan mods, it's an especially popular theme to create the most gut-wrenching, hair-pulling, ball-busting hard tributes to the franchise. Here's a look at some of the most notoriously difficult fan-made Mario games and mods. Not even tool-assisted runs will help you here. 10. Shobon no Action ![]() Shobon no Action (also occasionally romanized as "Syobon no Action") is a Java remake of Super Mario Bros., in which Mario is replaced by a white catlike creature, and most of the other enemies and characters are replaced by similar odd beings. This game isn't a complete copy of SMB, though. It's full of brand new tricks, traps, and "WTF" moments. Expect invisible blocks where there weren't any before, weird creatures to fall out of the sky and shoot out of pipes at you, and even seemingly-harmless scenery to suddenly kill you. You can play the game here. Watch someone play the first level: 9. Springboards and Shells Hack ![]() Think of the Springboards and Shells Hack your standard hard-mode Super Mario World mod. Rows of deadly spikes and Munchers, spin-jumping on dangerous enemies to get around, maneuvering Chargin' Chucks, using shells and other items in unorthodox ways, and having to hit the exact right place with a pixel's accuracy. Expect to waste a lot of lives and save states here. Heck, and this one isn't even the worst. Watch someone play a level the right way: 8. Ultimate Super Mario Bros. 3 ![]() [i]Ultimate Super Mario Bros. 3[/b] is a mod of Super Mario Bros. 3 (in case that wasn't apparent to you), which to begins looking no different than the original. The maps seem unchanged, but the difference is apparent the moment you enter a level. The first stage features floating bodies of water over bottomless pits, Chain Chomps, Venus Fire Traps, Munchers, Hammer Bros., invisible blocks, and even a Thwomp. And this is merely a set up for what's to come. Watch someone play the mod: 7. Super Mario Bros. SpeedExpiation ![]() This mod is something a little different. It's almost exactly the same as Super Mario Bros. The levels are unchanged, it's the game mechanics which have been altered to really test you. The timer, which normally counts down at a rate of approximately two per second, now counts down by one per frame. That means from the moment the level begins, the timer will start shooting down towards zero, and you'll have a very brief amount of time to make it to the goal. And to make things even tougher, collecting coins or items or stomping enemies will instantly kill you. You'll have to fly right through the level without missing a beat to get to the goal on time. This is the ultimate speed run. Watch someone play: 6. Bowser Ruins ![]() Bowser Ruins isn't exactly a complete mod, since it's only a single level, yet this thing is guaranteed to piss you off (just like it says in the game). This level was made for a Hard Level Contest, and it's certainly fitting of the label. The level is filled with rows of Munchers, narrow spaces, and sparse amounts of items and enemies which all have to be used in specific ways. This single level took one YouTube player fifteen videos to complete. Watch said player play the level: 5. Mario's Evil Level ![]() Another particularly nasty Super Mario World mod, Mario's Evil Level isn't actually a single level, but a whole new game. Heck, you can even get killed in the introduction if you're not quick enough. The levels can only be beaten through precise movements as you guide yourself through unholy amounts of Munchers, Bullet Bills, fire, and other traps. There are even invisible spots that can kill you just by touching them, so there will be a lot of trial-and-error gameplay here, even with save states. Watch someone play: 4. Super Mario Tabarnak ![]() Super Mario Tabarnak is a famous SMW mod full of glitchy graphics, deadly traps, and Munchers. Lots of Munchers. This game would be really tough to beat without a guide, as you can find yourself in a dead end if you fail to accomplish some obscure goal a while back. The entire game is designed solely to be unfair to the player. Fun fact: "tabarnak" is a strong Quebecan swear. Watch someone play the insanely difficult final castle: 3. Pit of Despair ![]() The aptly-named Pit of Despair is a nasty mod often described as the most difficult Mario rom hack ever made. To even beat the level, you have to utilize almost every glitch in the original game. There's not a moment of rest, since you'll be hopping from one spot to another right from the get-go. If you miss a single beat, then you can kiss that goal goodbye. This mod even spawned a cruel sequel, Pit of Death. Watch someone play: 2. Super Mario Forever ![]() Another famous mod, Super Mario Forever is a Super Mario Bros. ROM hack known far and wide for its completely cruel level design. It's as though the designer was on a quest to prevent the player from having any fun at all playing. Invisible blocks at the most inconvenient locations, giant firebars everywhere, and almost all the gameplay occurring over a bottomless pit. The game became popularized by video of a player completely frustrated with it, dubbed "Super Mario Frustration". Watch part of the video (warning: potty mouth): 1. Kaizo Mario World ![]() The godfather of all hard Mario mods. Kaizo Mario World (sometimes fondly referred to as "******* Mario World") is an insanely difficult mod created by a Japanese internet user in response to a challenge by a friend. It has since received much attention from internet games, and has been the subject of many "Let's Play" video series on YouTube. Kaizo Mario World features every single dirty trick, every cruel level design detail and every surprise attack on your sanity fathomable, and has been the inspiration to almost every other mod on this Top Ten list. The amount of attention paid to making sure every aspect of the game will make you want to rip the hair out of your head is astounding; you're not even safe once you've beaten the level. An even nastier sequel, Kaizo Mario World 2, has been created. Here's a mere sample of one of the game's levels: That's it for today, come back tomorrow for the next one. | ||||||||||||||||||||

The Third Day of Christmas: Top 10 New Super Mario Bros. Wii Levels New Super Mario Bros. Wii was released last month to much critical acclaim, and has become one of the funnest titles for the Wii, whether you're playing with a group of friends or by yourself. When you're Goomba stomping, fireballing and penguin sliding, though, some of the games diverse levels might stick out to you as being particularly fun or unique. What are some of the coolest NSMBWii levels? Here's what I think. 10. World 1-5 ![]() This World 1 level takes you into the sky, onto mushrooms and floating platforms. It's your standard platform-hopping level, and gives you plenty of space to jump around and explore the game's mechanics. The multicolored, rotating blocks that make up parts of the stage will be a good test of your jumping accuracy, and your steadiness. It's a good set up for the rest of the game. Oh, and if the previous levels weren't a killer with four players, this one probably will be. 9. World 2-3 ![]() Still pretty early on in the game, this map takes you deep underground, where most of everything is pitch black. The only light you'll get is from a few infrequent torches, and the barage of fireballs that'll be thrown your way by the Venus Fire Traps inhabiting the level. You should hope ti have a Fire Flower to guide your way and clear out vermin, unless you're lucky enought to come across a Starman, which will illuminate the entire cave for you. Watch your step! 8. World 5-4 ![]() This stage features a long raft floating over a river of toxic purple liquid, as an endless supply of Goombas, Koopas, Piranha Plants and Bob-ombs fall from the sky. The raft has a weight limit, so if too many enemies are on the raft, you'll have to clear them off. The whole level will be a mad rush to keep the raft clean so you can make it to the end of the level. If you can't nab a Fire Flower or Ice Flower, then you'll just have to use the enemies against themselves. 7. World 7-2 ![]() A treacherous mountain level filled with Bullet Bills, Chain Chomps, and... gravity-defying bubbles of water? Not only will you be dodging volleys of Bullet Bills and avoiding other nasty enemies, but you'll also have to jump into and swim through floating balls of water. Be careful, though. Just because the water doesn't uphold the laws of gravity doesn't mean Mario can do the same. Also, if you decide to let any Chain Chomps loose, be sure to get out of the way first... 6. World 8-5 ![]() One of the most difficult levels in the game. This level takes place on a platform suspended over lava, which you must guide across the stage by tilting the Wiimote. While you're doing this, you'll also have to dodge lava geysers, parachuting Bob-ombs, and flocks of Crowbers. Oh, and did I mention the level's an autoscrolling one? Have fun. 5. World 5-5 ![]() Another autoscrolling world, though this one takes place in the sky rather than over lava. (Is that much better? You tell me.) You'll have to maneuver through this stage by riding on the backs of friendly Jumbo Rays. These fellows won't hurt you, but make sure you hop to another one when the one you're on starts to descend. If you're not lucky enough to have an invaluable Propeller Suit in this level, you can pick up one of the Propeller Blocks hidden beneath the clouds. 4. World 5-2 ![]() This level starts off normally. Just a regular forest level featuring the ever-familiar Wigglers. Once you descend underground, though, the level becomes anything but normal. The stage is a giant anthill-like structure filled with tunnels and pools of deadly purple water. Giant-sized Wigglers populate the caves, and while their backs can be safely bounced upon, you can easily get trampled underneath their many legs if you're not careful. Proceed with caution, as one of those jumbo Wigglers could easily drop from a higher level right onto your head. Who's the insect now? 3. World 9-8 ![]() The very last level in the game, found in the secret World 9 and unlocked by locating every Star Coin in World 8. This level is a very peculiar one. It scrolls automatically and will lead you across the sky via smiling clouds which bounce you through the air like trampolines. The first half of the level is filled with Fuzzies, which travel along wires and cause you trouble if you don't watch where you bounce. The second half of the stage features gargantuan King Bills, which are indestructable and will plow right through you unless you're able to take cover. Not too difficult a level, but tons of fun. 2. World 8-7 ![]() A secret level reached through a secret exit in World 8-2. This level features Bonecoasters (not Bonercoaster), which are skeletal rollercoasters you ride at breakneck speeds through pools and plumes of lava. You'll have to pay very close attention to where the ride is taking you, otherwise you might end up burnt to a crisp. Yet another level that's a blast with friends... as long as you don't get picked up and thrown into the lava. 1. World 7-6 ![]() Finally, the platforming return of the loveable Parabeetles from Super Mario Bros. 3. Another autoscrolling level, this one takes you across the sky as you jump from Parabeetle to Parabeetle. The little ones will carry you upwards if you stand on their backs, while the large ones will descend slowly if you stand on them. Maneuvering from one to another can be very difficult, and you're even rewarded with a 1-up if you're able to safely land on eight different Parabeetles. One of the most challenging levels in the game the first time around, and completely crazy if you're playing with friends. That's it for today. Check in tomorrow for another list. |

Although I did notice I had ended up picking five levels from that world for the list. Oh well. |
