In 1993, he and Yoshi even starred in a first-person shooter! Played from the perspective of Mario atop Yoshi's back, Yoshi's Safari assigned players the mission to save King Fret and Prince Pine, the monarchs of Jewelry Land, from King Bowser and his Koopalings. In order to accomplish this mission, players used the Super Scope (a bazooka-shaped light gun compatible with the Super NES) to blow Bowser's minions away as they came rushing at the screen. The game is little more than a footnote in Mario's vast and colorful history. Notably, however, it was the first game in which Princess Toadstool was referred to as Princess Peach outside of Japan. This wouldn't happen again until Super Mario 64 three years later. For those who have never seen Yoshi's Safari in action, here's a gameplay video: | ||
