Item of the Week #5

Ice Flower

First Appearance: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS, 2005)
Latest Appearance: Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii, 2009)

Although the Mario franchise has seen the Fire Flower since Super Mario Bros. on the NES, its polar opposite, the Ice Flower, wasn't introduced until some 20 year later. Of course Mario games have never been a slouch for Snow/Ice Levels, I think nearly every single Mario game has featured a level in that backdrop, but it wasn't until Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time on the DS that we finally got to see Mario take up an Ice-themed power-up. Since then, we've seen the Ice Flower appear again in two more recent games, albeit with drastically different effects.

Next appearing in Super Mario Galaxy, the Ice Flower's power changes massively in comparison to its premier. Instead of shooting Ice Balls, Mario himself turns into solid ice. This form boasts no actual attack advantage, in fact, it seems the designers specifically programmed the Ice Flower to work oppositely of the Fire Flower, instead of an aggressive ability, Mario sports a completely passive ability, allowing him to quickly skate away on anything, including lava and water, and allows him to freeze water platforms in interesting areas for access to new areas, including the tops of fountains and the sides of waterfalls!

The Ice Flower also had its own theme music in Mario Galaxy, (although I do think its clever they had it similiar to the Fire Flower's, just at the changed pitch, this is not one of my favorite Mario power-up themes at all) take a listen:

The Ice Flower makes yet another appearance in the recently released Super Mario Bros. Wii, again with brand new effects not seen in either of its previous showings. Like its initial use, Mario now throws Ice Balls again, but this time they actually freeze the enemy where they stand, encasing them in a block of ice! Similar to the Penguin Suit featured in the same game, the Ice Flower actually holds greater ice powers then its web-footed counterpart, whereas Penguin Ice Balls wear off after a short time and allow the enemy to escape, Ice Flower Ice Balls keep the enemy trapped seemingly longer, giving the user a longer amount of time to throw or evade their frozen foe completely.

In the end, the Ice Flower stands as a somewhat expected power-up, long past due since the premier of the Fire Flower, but has, in each of its incarnations, shown surprising effects that differ from previous appearances. Normally, Mario power-ups may change slightly, but still keep the same basic concept behind them, but the Ice Flower breaks that mold and each time we're treated to it, we seem to get a new effect to master! Have to wonder what it'll be like if it makes a reappearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2 . . .

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that difference.

It was probabaly done to make it more than just a 'lesser' version of the Penguin Suit. As a result the Ice Flower was probabaly one of the most useful items in the same offensively. It is probabaly THE best item for taking on the Castles and Bosses. Not only was it one of the onyl ways to neutralize the Drybones, but it could stop the magis shots from Larry, Iggy, Morton, Roy, Ludwig, and Kamek! Not to mention it was incredibly useful when dealing with Bowser Jr's fireballs in the last fight.

Also Forgot Fun Fact!: Mario's design for Ice Mario in Super Mario Bros. Wii is actually the same color configuration he sported as one of his alternative costumes in Super Smash Bros.

wat

no

I've frozen many an enemy with the stupid Ice Flower and they've broken out.

Unless it's one of those things that only applies to 1-player mode.

EXPLAIN THIS.

^ Hmmm . . . maybe I'll have to pick up my game and try this out to be sure, this is what I found during my research anyway . . . that would be bad if I was actually wrong. XD

Well you are right, I am ashamed to say I got bad information for this, and although I think the Ice Flower's Ice Balls last longer . . . enemies do in fact escape after a set amount of time. Sorry!
