That's a great hook, though. I'm not a big RPG fan, so I'd be highly unlikely to buy an RPG starring new, unestablished characters, regardless of whether or not Nintendo made it. (And no, people, Nintendo did not make Hotel Mario, Mario's Time Machine, Mario Is Missing!, or Mario Teaches Typing.)

Hey, they lent the name, it's their fault. All of the RPGs so far are from second-party developers they trusted with the license (Intelligent Systems et al.), and so far they're not bad.

(1 There are also Mario and Sonic Olympic games and that DDR Mario game, which have at best mixed reviews.)

I'm not criticizing the idea; mature Mario RPG might not turn out bad. It's just that I've seen lots of games where they use the gimmick as a crutch and they walk kind of lame as a result. For example, video games based on movies; when they're good, it's usually the exception.

Also, thinking about mature Mario makes my head hurt.

Hmmmm....reading through the thread I can only say 2 things.
First that where we are now is off topic to what it was in the beginning.
Second that you could do mature Mario but then where is the nostalgia that people feel when they play it. If they did make a more adult Mario it would be hard to change him back to his fun loved by children self if the need should arise. Or at least I think.

I think the mature-ist Mario RPG was the original SMRPG. The athmosphere of it was very modest in comparison to, say... SM64.

Given that the Mario games were inspired by "Alice in wonderland" I don't know if stripping them of the absured and sureal imagery would be a good thing.

Wasn't Peach and Mario only like 2 years apart in age? I mean, Baby Peach played with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi when they were toddlers, so yeah she may be a little younger but not by much really.

Maybe Mario just looks more mature/older, or Peach naturally looks younger?

Maybe they age really, really slowly like Sonic does in his universe?

Another way to explaine away the lack of continuity of the Mario games is to make use of the old Zelda stand by and say that each game is a retelling of a legend passed down and altered through the genirations.

SMRPG had just the right dose, though. And even then, a little less could draw in a new crowd. Trust me, I don't want Mario dual-wielding uzis and having sex mini-games with Peach, well maybe, but probably not, but I think a tinge less Twink-esque material is in order.
