Mario: A Decade In Review

As Mario finishes out his third decade as everyone's favorite video game hero, we can look back and see that the veteran entertainer is certainly not losing the spring from his step. For Mario, 2000-2009 was just as packed with surprises and successes as his previous years, and the hits just keep on coming. Here's a look back at this past decade, and the grand and notable things Mario achieved.

Well, to start with, he starred in five brand new action-adventures! Two of them were highly innovative 3-D platformers (Super Mario Galaxy became the most critically acclaimed game since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, incidentally), and another two took us back to the nostalgic side-scrolling action of yesteryear. As for Super Paper Mario...well, I don't know what that was, but it was a triumph all the same.

But that wasn't enough for our man Mario! He also starred in no less than five(!!!!!!) RPGs! Man, I wish I could travel back in time to 1990 and tell the people there that, in the future, Mario is the greatest RPG hero of them all.

Luigi finally got his first marquee role (outside of Mario Is Missing!), and Princess Toadstool got her own game as well! Also, we were finally given a true follow-up to SMW 2: Yoshi's Island!

And who'd have thunk we'd be playing a bigger, graphically enhanced version of Super Mario 64 on a handheld, amirite?

Additionally, Mario continued to party, kart, and smash like a maniac!

Donkey Kong's achievements were less spectacular, but he had his moments.

And let's not forget to bow our heads and wish "Captain" Lou Albano - the Mario of a generation - a fond farewell.

What will Mario and friends get up to in the new decade? I don't know, but I can't wait to find out!

(A) ...Dang. That's a lot of games, almost all of them good.

(B) ...Dang. I didn't know we could go 10 pics in a post now.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^ lol silly cap

It was a good decade for Mario. Gives me faith that great classics like SMB3, Yoshi's Island and SM64 aren't just a thing of the past.
