Character of the Week #26

Blooper

First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985)
Latest Appearance: New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii, 2009)

One of Mario's most famous sub-aquatic enemies, the squid-like Blooper makes a perilous nuisance of itself with its erratic, zig-zagging pattern of movement. It has been known to attack with ink and electricity, and can sometimes be spotted hauling a line of infants in its wake. A Fire Flower will make underwater levels a lot easier.

In Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, Bloopers inexplicably float about in the air in some sky-high levels. In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario can go "Blooper surfing" in Ricco Harbor, and also must contend with the menacing, pollution-spewing Gooper Blooper. Twice.

Bloopers are used as items in Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii. When deployed by a player, it squirts ink onto the screens of all human players, obscuring their view. It affects CPU players as well, causing them to swerve around on the track.

As unlikely as it may seem, Blooper is a playable character in both Mario Party 8 and Mario Super Sluggers.

FIREBALL IT. FIREBALL IT QUICKLY.

Being chased by a Blooper is one of the scariest things that can happen to you in every 2-D Mario platformer.

Until you get under it.

Never liked these. Not because they're annoying, just because I don't like them.

Also, the blue Cheep Cheeps are more annoying than these.

Ugh the mother blooper and kids can be rather annoying at times. The time I was most bothered was the dark underwater level in SMBW.

- You stupid dog.

These guys are pricks. They've probably gotten me more times than any other regular enemy.

I hate that level, especially the last section where you have to swim up a narrow shaft and get pushed into Bloopers and jellyfish by streaming jets of water.

Level 1-3 in SMB3 have the mother with the children in it.

I Toast it and it started falling of screen and im following it down because there is a bonus room down there, then the little bugger decides to make a last efort and scare me so i almost **** my pants and because of it being Lethal that moment takes my firepower away.

It was weird when they made him a Playable character. I mean Drybones was cool in Mario Party . . . but I didn't really understand why they put Blooper in there, did he win some contest in Japan or something?

I have no idea. I mean, at least Dry Bones has a semi-anthropomorphic body. But Blooper is just a big, squishy squid.

It is a board game; it's merely a piece after all, like all the other characters, and since it is a board game, it wouldn't bother me if a Goomba was a playable character, and don't speak of any mini-game madness Goomba would create; it is Spartaa video game after all.

In regards to ^, that would be an interesting idea...

I think it would be cool if Bowser in the next Mario game changed based on certain power ups from his previous games, Baby Bowser, Dry Bowser, maybe even Star Rod Bowser and Giga Bowser, and in each form Bowser Rules change for the gameplay. Like Giga Bowser would sometimes just attack randomly, Star Rod Bowser would magically switch spaces . . .

I just think Bloober is weird though as a character, I mean he doesn't even have legs. Granted, I think Boo was a character once in Mario Party right? Although he at least has arms.

In board game play, sure. But I still can't picture how Blooper works during mini-game play. Y'know, when you have to run somewhere, or grab something......or something.

He floats above the ground, and he picks up/punches/kicks with his side tentacles.

Duh.
