The Complete Mario Compendium

The Complete Mario Compendium

(Comprising his games, the games that make up his universe, and games in which he and/or his supporting cast make cameo appearances)

This is a list compiling Mario's complete history of appearances in video games. It includes all titles, including those unreleased in North America. The list is sorted by console, and the year of each game's release appears in parentheses next to each game's title. All release dates (except for the release dates of games unreleased in North America) correspond to North American release dates. The list is divided into five categories:

Category A: Games in which Mario is the star (or co-star)

Category B: Games in which Mario is not the star, but makes a cameo appearance as a playable character, or plays an important supporting role

Category C: Games in which Mario makes a brief, non-playable cameo appearance

Category D: Games in which Mario does not appear at all, but which still comprise a part of the greater Mario universe (as they star members of his supporting cast)

Category E: Games which do not comprise a part of the greater Mario universe, but feature cameo or guest appearances by members of Mario's supporting cast (each game is accompanied by a specification of the cameo occuring within that game)

No game is classified under more than one of the five categories. Each game fits under one category or another. This way, there is no repeating.

Pretty sure this one goes in Category B, since I believe that Mario himself is an NPC in this one:

Aside from that, it's a pretty comprehensive list. Nice going.

Thumbs up

Thanks for that. I actually couldn't find anything that would tell me whether or not Mario appeared in Donkey Kong Circus, and what role he played if he did. I'll make the appropriate edit.

What about games that refer to Mario only through text, or parody him?

Didn't include those, since it doesn't constitute an actual appearance by the character.

Yeah, I thought this would be a good resource for Mario fans, since he and his supporting cast have appeared in so many games over the years.

Okay, after a little research, I've updated with some more titles. Also, the Super Mario Wiki seems to believe that there are Chain Chomps in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. Can anybody confirm this? I also would like to know whether or not Tiptup the turtle appears in the Xbox's downloadable versions of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. If someone can confirm these for me, I'll add them to the compendium.

Okay, thanks. I'll add those to the compendium then. While I don't know for certain, I've always assumed that Tiptup was created specifically for Diddy Kong Racing, which would make him a Mario Universe character. If anyone has any special knowledge concerning this, however, and can tell me that Tiptup was carried over from the in-progress Banjo-Kazooie and inserted into DKR as a guest star (like Banjo himself was), then feel free to share, and we can officially drum Tiptup out of the Mario ranks.

^Seems like a frivolous distinction to me, inasmuch as the games were developed more or less concurrently.

And if originating in DKR makes Tiptup a Mario character, it should by all rights make Conker a Mario character as well.

After Nintendo sold Rare, Nintendo was allowed to keep the rights to most characters, while some of the more prominent of Rare's creations (Conker, Banjo) went to Rare. In the DS remake of Diddy Kong Racing, Conker and Banjo were replaced with Dixie and Tiny Kong. So as far as we're concerned, Conker and Banjo's appearance in the original DKR was just a cameo appearance by a couple of Rare characters in a Nintendo character game.

I don't know what's up with Tiptup, though.

Yeah, but I'm as anal as the day is long.

And if originating in DKR makes Tiptup a Mario character, it should by all rights make Conker a Mario character as well.
Nope, because Conker didn't originate with Diddy Kong Racing. Like Banjo, he was created to helm his own franchise, and his games were deep in development, widely publicized, and highly anticipated long before DKR was even made known to the gaming public. That's why it's not revisionist either. Because Banjo and Conker never began with DKR; they were simply plucked from their own in-development games and inserted into DKR as guest stars, most likely in order to keep them visible and keep interest up.

I'm laughing immaturely right now. It's nothing I can help.

I'll take your word on Banjo and Conker having long had projects in development by the time DKR appeared. Still don't see as it means Banjo and Conker aren't a part of the Mario universe. Seems to me that if A is in the same universe as B, and B with C, and C with D, it means A is in the same universe as D.

Nah, because then Goomba could be a Zelda character just because he appears in Link's Awakening. Or Mario and Sonic could be part of the same universe just because they go to the Olympics together.

When you have a character from one franchise make a cameo appearance in another franchise, it's generally best to just go by the wormhole rule. Character A gets sucked into a transdimensional wormhole, lands in Character B's universe, sticks around long enough to give a little fan service, then takes the same wormhole back to his own world, and no one ever speaks of it again.

I wouldn't call Conker or Banjo cameos in DKR. DKR isn't like SSB---it has an actual narrative, and they're a part of it.
