Game of the Week #28

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (Famicom, 1986)

Released in Japan for the Famicom disk system (the Japanese version of the NES), the game we in the West now know as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels was the original Super Mario Bros. 2. Employing the same engine as the original Super Mario Bros., it provided a much more difficult challenge for players who had mastered Mario's first Mushroom Kingdom adventure. Nintendo of America, however, anticipated poor sales from such a game in the States, due to its steep difficulty and general lack of new things to do. Thus the game remained in the Land of the Rising Sun, and we were given the opportunity to throw vegetables at Shy Guys instead (which is certainly no bad thing). American gamers did finally get a taste of what they had been missing, however, when a graphically enhanced version of Japan's SMB 2 was included in 1993's Super Mario All-Stars. In 1999, a watered-down version of The Lost Levels was included as an unlockable bonus in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Game Boy Color.

More than any other Mario adventure you can name, SMB: The Lost Levels is a true master of the "WTF?!" moment. Popular examples include:

"WTF?! That Super Mushroom just killed me!"

"WTF?! That Warp Zone just sent me all the way back to World 1!"

"WTF?! This chasm is too big for ten Marios to jump across! And I have to use Fire Bars as stepping stones?! And why are the Bloopers flying?! WTF?!?!?!"

The original Famicom version of The Lost Levels is available for download from the Wii Virtual Console for 600 Wii Points. And take my word for it, folks; you haven't really played The Lost Levels until you've played the original version. So, you think you were good at the Super NES version? Well, Nintendo wanted you to think you were good at it. Now they just don't care. So give the original version a whirl and see if your fragile ego can survive.
