Wii (Wii, 2009) One of the most popular and enduring inhabitants of the Mario universe, Yoshi debuted in Super Mario World as Mario's sidekick and trusty steed. The perpetually hungry dinosaur went on to great and instant fame, and Nintendo capitalized on this by inserting him into enjoyable but largely forgettable games like Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, and Yoshi's Safari. Then, in 1995, came Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and this masterpiece of the 16-bit era was the game that really brought Yoshi into his own. Among other things, Yoshi's Island endowed Yoshi with the abilities for which he is best known today, including his Ground Pound, his Flutter Jump, and his ability to swallow enemies and convert them into eggs for throwing. Yoshi's Island also gave birth to a series of semi-sequels starring the long-tongued dino, including Yoshi's Story, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, Yoshi Touch & Go, and Yoshi's Island DS. Although Yoshi and his multicolored friends enjoy their own adventures, that doesn't stop them from continuing to assist Mario in his never-ending crusade against the Koopas. Indeed Yoshi re-assumes his role as "horse" in Super Mario Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros. Wii (and will do so again in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2). He's a playable character in Super Mario 64 DS, and a helpful presence in most of the Mario RPGs. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a baby Yoshi proves to be an invaluable ally of Mario's. And, of course, Yoshi has never met a Party, Kart, sports, or Smash Bros. title he didn't like. Some people like to rag on Yoshi for being too cute. Or annoying. Or gay. Or whatever. But think back to how much fun Super Mario World was when you played it for the very first time. Think back to how much fun you had jumping on Yoshi's back and rampaging across the landscape, gobbling up Koopas, Monty Moles, and Piranha Plants with reckless abandon. Like him or hate him, you have to admit that the Mario Universe just wouldn't be the same place without that. |

I mean, all of the seemingly male Yoshis appear to have no problem laying eggs of their own... maybe they reproduce asexually? Then again, they usually just use the eggs as weapons. Maybe Yoshis are filicidal. |

It's probably that kind of egg that Yoshis use as weapons. After all, I fail to see how a Shy Guy that has passed through a Yoshi's digestive tract can possibly transform into a baby Yoshi. The laying of eggs that actually result in Yoshi offspring is probably handled quite differently. |

Maybe they have hyperactive metabolisms that take food, digests it, and turns it into babyjuice. |

Like when one dies you just find him again later as a baby Yoshi, and then sometimes a new Yoshi is made . . . I dunno, maybe there's a single female "Queen Yoshi" and all the others are male, or maybe Nintendo has retconned that Birdo is the female Yoshi? |

He's such a cute character though, and I don't know why everyone says he's useless, personally think he is pretty cool, Super Mario World 2 is a cool game, and Yoshi's been a true blue friend ever since, even with us continually dumping him down cliffs and lava just to get an extra jump. I personally am excited about seeing him in the next Mario Galaxy game, and would even be excited to see more solo Yoshi Island games, or see Yoshi play a main character again like he did in Super Mario 64DS. Personally I'd love to see more of the shell-eating Yoshi return instead of the fruit, flying Yoshi, stomp Yoshi, and fire-spitting Yoshi are pretty cool! For a flutter jumping dragon dinosaur Yoshi is pretty cool in my opinion! |
