Squawks

First Appearance: Donkey Kong Country (Super NES, 1994)
Latest Appearance: Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast (Wii, 2007)

One of the Kong clan's most prolific animal allies, Squawks the parrot made his debut in a minor role in Donkey Kong Country, in which he held a flashlight to guide the player through a single, poorly-illuminated level. His role was expanded greatly in DKC 2, however. In this sequel, he appeared in many different levels, carrying Diddy and Dixie Kong in his talons as he flew them over obstacles and spat eggs at enemies (what's with Mario characters and egg-based attacks, anyway?). In one level, a purple version of Squawks helped Diddy and Dixie descend through a giant beehive.

Squawks returned to perform similar duties in DKC 3, and the purple Squawks was given more to do as well; although still unable to spit eggs, the purple Squawks could now fly freely in any direction, and heft barrels with his talons to bomb unsuspecting enemies.

Squawks appears frequently in Donkey Kong 64, providing the Kongs with tips and advice or helping them obtain certain Golden Bananas.

Both the green and purple Squawks can be deployed as "items" in the Wii racing game Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast. In this game, the purple Squawks is finally given his own, distinct name; Quawks. (Yes, I know it sucks. Don't shoot the messenger.)
