He invaded Mario's world in Super Mario RPG and, in the process, destroyed the wish-granting Star Road (wittingly or unwittingly, we really don't know). Using Bowser's castle as a gateway between Mario's world and his own, Smithy used the terrible resources of his factory to begin turning out weapons and mechanical monsters that would help facilitate his conquest of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. When Mario and his fellow heroes first encounter Smithy in the upper echelons of the factory, the megalomaniacal mechanoid resembles an evil Santa Claus, what with his red cloak and big, white beard (and, come to think of it, he lives in a workshop that turns out very dangerous "toys". Hmm...). Once the heroes drive him down into the basement, however, he reveals his true form and attacks his antagonists with a variety of different heads. Although a onetime villain who is never, ever going to be seen again (so get used to the idea), Smithy enjoys something of a cult following among Mario fans, and he is probably the most popular of the Mario RPG villains (Cackletta, Princess Shroob, and the Shadow Queen just don't have the same degree of street cred). This could be due to the epic scale of SMRPG, the character's seeming "coolness factor", or.....some other thing, I don't know. He also has a heckuva theme song. | ||
