Jumpman/Baby Mario Timeline Theory

Now, we all know the legend of Mario, where he and his brother get sucked into the pipes as plumbers and end up as the saviors of the Mushroom Kingdom . . . but then we also know the tales of Baby Mario being saved by Yoshi, and growing up in the Mushroom Kingdom from childhood along with Baby Luigi and Baby Princess Peach . . . but then there is also Mario who fought Donkey Kong, and then some odd years later, that Donkey Kong is the old Cranky Kong, while Mario still looks the same age . . . explanation?

LIKE DONKEY KONG AND DONKEY KONG JR, BABY MARIO IS JUMPMAN MARIO'S SON!!

Both continuities are correct, there is a Mario who used to live in the 'real world'/Earth, and who, with his brother, were warped into the Mushroom Kingdom. This is also the same Mario who saved Pauline from Donkey Kong, and then tried to get revenge on him only to be stopped by Donkey Kong Junior. When he arrived, he saved Princess Toadstool from King Koopa, thus becoming the savior of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Baby Mario is actually this Mario (Jumpman Mario's) son, more than likely so is Baby Luigi, simply named after Jumpman Mario's possibly (or even possibly cousins who believe they are brothers). Princess Peach is Princess Toadstool's daughter, thus the name change, as well as Bowser is King Koopa's son. This could also give Bowser an extended family, so the Koopalings are in actuality nieces and nephews, as opposed to sons and daughter (Bowser Jr. being Bowser's only real son, and thus why he's the 'favorite').

This would give evidence to both timelines existing, much like Legend of Zelda, there are more than one Mario, the original Jumpman, and his descendant. This would also explain why Cranky Kong is so old when he was supposed o have fought Mario when he was younger, and why DK and Mario seem the same age, the Mario that fought Cranky Kong was the current Mario's father!

And yes, I stumbled across this theory at Super Mario Bros - Television Tropes & Idioms . . . but it still blew my mind!

Interesting theory.

Though I hate to say it, but I think the whole "Mario and Luigi are from Brooklyn" thing has been retconned. In fact, the Game Boy remake of Donkey Kong had the original construction tower sequence taking place in "Big Ape City" (I think that was the name), not New York, so it's possible Mario and Luigi have always been residents of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Big Ape City is in Donkey Kong Land (although Nintendo Power did refer to Big Ape City in that game as being the site of the original Donkey Kong game). I don't think the city in 1994's Donkey Kong actually has a proper name (the worlds in that game are given simplistic, generic names like "Forest", "Iceberg", "Airplane", etc.).

This is precisely why I don't try to assign any cohesive continuity to the Mario universe. I've said before that Mario is kind of like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny in that his adventures and escapades continuously insert him into different roles and settings, and don't necessarily take place in any particular order. Mario is so versatile that you can do just about anything with him, and I think that's great.

So, why does Pauline appear in MvsDK2, alongside a bunch of Toads?

As far as I know, the Brooklyn thing appeared in almost all American media but the games themselves (except for Mario is Missing!, which mentions it in the manual).

Especially when going by the poisonous shrinking mushrooms appearing throughout the game. Not to mention the end of the game, which has
Spoiler Below
Donkey Kong growing King Kong-sized thanks to a bunch of Super Mushrooms. And the ending definitely takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom.

But I don't follow Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny, and neither do must of us. I think that's why we try to pin some psuedo-possible story-line to Mario so he isn't like that.

I agree that there isn't a large continuity, but some games do have their own continuities. Most believe that Sunshine happens directly after Super Mario World, for example.

Obviously, the rpgs(that have sequels) go in a row, as do the Mario Parties(save Advance and DS, though those could be placed between n64/gcn and gcn/wii in order, though) and the Mario Karts(exact release order, Arcade version withstanding), and Luigi's Mansion may take place before or after Sunshine. Who knows.

As for the theory, I agree, it makes sense. I always thought that, personally. One could argue that in Mario Golf(n64), that that particular regular Mario is Jumpman, but then there's Metal Mario...never mind on that one. Damn you, Mario clones!
