TEC (formally TEC-XX) is the world's only perfect computer, invented by the X-Nauts and installed in their Fortress on the moon. Due to a glitch, he actually falls in love with Princess Toadstool when she is kidnapped by the X-Nauts and brought to the Fortress. Disconcerted by these new, unfamiliar feelings, and perturbed that there is actually something in the universe that he does not comprehend, he asks the captive Princess to educate him about love. In return, he permits her to use his communicator to contact Mario via email.

Over the course of the game, TEC falls ever more deeply in love with Princess Toadstool. He also comes to fully understand what the X-Nauts plan to do with the Princess. When he realizes that Sir Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts, plans to use the Princess as a vessel for the resurrected Shadow Queen, his affection for her compels him to warn her to escape. Before she can do so, however, Grodus takes the Princess away and orders that TEC be shut down and his hard drive wiped clean.

Later, after Mario has cleared out the X-Naut Fortress and retrieved the last Crystal Star, an extremely weakened TEC - running on backup power and cached memory - informs Mario of Grodus' plans for the Princess and asks that he hurry to save her. Then, in order to allow Mario to escape from the Fortress, TEC uses his last power reserves to activate a teleporter that will lead the hero back to Earth. In doing this, TEC ceases to exist as a conscious entity; effectively, he dies.

After the Shadow Queen is defeated, however, TEC miraculously reboots. He isn't sure how this has happened, but he informs Mario that he saw a bright light and heard Princess Toadstool's voice as he re-awoke.

TEC is likely partially inspired by the HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
