Character of the Week #39

Thwomp

First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, 1990)
Latest Appearance: New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii, 2009)

Ever since Thwomp's debut in SMB 3, Mario has had to deal with the constant threat of being crushed by the heavy stone block. Most often found inside of castles, fortresses, and other dungeon-like areas, Thwomps will remain suspended aloft until Mario passes beneath them, at which point they will plunge downwards in an attempt to crush our hero. They have changed in appearance over the years; they started out blue in SMB 3, then changed to gray in Super Mario World, then returned to blue after Super Mario RPG, and have since gone back to gray again. Super Mario 64 saw them stripped of their menacing spikes, but they've regained them as of 2004.

Thwomps have taken on many roles throughout the Mario Party series, and they always appear as obstacles on the Bowser's Castle courses of the Mario Kart series.

Thwomps have also appeared in a number of Zelda titles, including Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages. Thwomp even serves as the Level 2 boss in this latter game. Here's a video.

I always called Thwomps that move up and down "Boom-Booms" and ones that move from side to side "Squeeshies." -CSM

^ Could someone elaborate on that for those of us who were unlucky enough to never own SM64?

On the Bowser's Castle course in Mario Kart 64, there's a Thwomp behind a cage/gate, and I think it laughs nastily at you if you crash into the gate. Also, I think it's tinged green.

Huh, doesn't sound too creepy but I guess you don't know till you've seen it yourself.
