(NES, 1985) Latest Appearance: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii, 2010) Lakitu is an airborne menace who, in most Super Mario adventures, flies around on a happy little cloud and attempts to bombardier Mario with barrages of Spiny Eggs. It's possible to defeat Lakitu, and, in many games, you can even take his cloud for a ride after doing so, but he's so quick and so relentless that your best bet will often be to run the hell away. One of Mario's more versatile enemies, Lakitu has tested a wide array of attack techniques against the heroic plumber over the years. He's been known to attack not only from the clouds, but also from within pipes or niches in cave walls. In SMB 3, his bouncing, green Spiny Eggs are worse than the regular kind (he knows how to lead you with those things!). And in Super Mario World, Lakitu attempts to bait Mario with a 1-Up Mushroom dangling from the end of a fishing pole (a tool that Lakitu has found supremely useful since). More benevolent Lakitus have played important roles in the Mario series as well. For Mario's 3-D debut in Super Mario 64, the free-roaming camera was controlled by a Lakitu. Lakitu has also been an integral part of Mario's karting and sports outings, serving frequently as a referee, umpire, or cameraman. Fun Fact: Nintendo's official strategy guide for Super Mario RPG lists Lakitu's attack power erroneously as 450. If this were true, Lakitu would be more powerful than any other enemy character in the game, including Culex. |
