Character of the Week #46

Petey Piranha

First Appearance: Super Mario Sunshine (GCN, 2002)
Latest Appearance: Mario Power Tennis (Wii, 2009)

Petey Piranha is an oddity among Piranha Plants. Unlike most of his species, he is not rooted to the ground and thus is able to move about freely. Even more bizarrely, he is actually able to fly (he flaps his leaves like little wings). In spite of his abnormally large size, he is suggested to be an infant.

Petey first appeared as a boss character in Super Mario Sunshine, then went on to play a similarly antagonistic role in several subsequent Mario games, including New Super Mario Bros., Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario Pinball Land, Super Princess Peach, and even Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

As unlikely as it might seem, Petey has also made frequent appearances as a playable character. (That must have been purely Nintendo's idea, because goodness knows none of us kept clamoring to see him in expanded roles.) His playable roles include (but are not limited to) Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario Strikers Charged.

Personally, I have my doubts that we'll be seeing much more of Petey Piranha. Not only has the currency of Super Mario Sunshine given way to that of the Super Mario Galaxy games (from which Petey has been completely absent), but nor has Petey appeared in any of the more recent Mario multiplayer outings, such as Mario Kart Wii or Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. As it stands, his most recent appearance (outside of the modified Wii version of the GameCube's Mario Power Tennis) has been in 2008's Mario Super Sluggers.

I'm kind of surprised that Petey has gotten the amount of appearances that he has.

Though, Dino Piranha is pretty much like Petey anyway, so maybe Miyamoto just likes plants in polkadotted underpants. :/
