Game of the Week #46

Mario Kart 64 (N64, 1997)

The enormously successful follow-up to Super Mario Kart for the Super NES, Mario Kart 64 improves on its predecessor in just about every conceivable way. Though it might seem dated by today's standards (and certainly less complex in the face of subsequent Mario Kart titles for the GameCube, GBA, DS, and Wii), the graphics, music, and sound were all pretty impressive. The tracks are diverse and a lot of fun, and four-player support (one of the N64's strong points) was extremely attractive. The switch from Super Mario Kart's Mode 7 graphics to Mario Kart 64's 3-D, in particular, introduced a whole new dimension of gameplay on topographical courses.

Fun Fact: Mario Kart 64 is the only installment in the Mario Kart series in which the Special Cup is available right from the beginning.

My first version of Mario Kart that I ever played...I've played them all, and while I think Double Dash is more fun, I have lots of memories of the 64 version.

Not to mention, very memorable end credit music.

I agree. It's fun, solid, and doesn't go to the wild excess committed by the GCN and Wii versions.
