The 12 player limit in MKWii makes me think the best strategy is to stay in second until near the end of the race, otherwise unending spiny shells will just kill you.

Fake Item Box: In most games, there's at least something to tell them apart from normal item boxes (I don't remember if MK64 did this or not, I'm thinking no). However, since real item boxes are seldom in absolutely random places, I can usually figure it out anyway.
Blooper: Maybe it keeps your vital spots open. Besides, that still doesn't account for the fact that CPUs are essentially unaffected by it.

Fake Item: In MK64, they were upside-down from normal boxes & unless they were placed right behind a normal box, you could tell them right away since they broke the patterns.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Funny. I love the blooper BECAUSE of the effect they have on the CPU players. I just keep driving like nothing happened. The CPU characters slam on the brakes and start weaving around like drunks.

Thunder Cloud is the worst. Sooo painful when there's a big gap between the players and you keep getting them.

Thunderbolt is annoying because they show up way too often in the later games, but otherwise they aren't so bad unless you happen to be in the middle of an important turn or in mid-air.

Spiny shell would be a close second for me--but I find it the most difficult to recover from the thunder cloud.
