3DS Mario Game in Development

3DS Mario Game in Development

Quote:
It shouldn't come as any sort of shock to hear that Shigeru Miyamoto is working on a Mario game for a new Nintendo platform. That's exactly what the series' creator stated in a recent edition of Iwata Asks.

Speaking about the culture of Kyoto and the history of the Mario franchise, Miyamoto said quite plainly, "So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system." He added, "I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS."

The last original Super Mario game for a handheld was New Super Mario Bros., the 2D Mario game that led to the development of New Super Mario Bros. Wii (pictured above). A 3D Mario game did appear on the DS with the port of Super Mario 64, but there's never been an original Mario game in 3D on a Nintendo handheld. Miyamoto said late last year that we could expect both 2D and 3D Mario games on the 3DS.
New Super Mario Bros. 3DS?

Ya beat me to it. Very pleased with this news. It's not a shock, but it's actually a surprise that he's talking about it, as Nintendo and their people are normally mum about games until they're ready to show off. Here's hoping it's a NSMB game, although a 3D platformer could actually work if they show depth perception and give distance/speed cues.

Maybe they're a bit self-conscious about the lack of first-party titles for launch, if they're already tipping off the press?

^I'm more worried about the ability to change camera angles.

Sure, the D-Pad or touch screen could work, but not very comfortably.

Good game design should make conscious manipulation of the camera unnecessary, although most devs just can't manage it. The lack of a second analogue is certainly a concern. Shoulder buttons were practically made for camera controls, although nobody ever sets it to them.

Most of you guys already like 3D "platformers", anyway, as Nintendo's made huge adjustments to make the gameplay less awkward despite the lack of depth perception and speed cues. I was thinking more along the lines of actually making the platforming element of the platformer important again.

*Shrug*

Both 2d and 3d games can work if they manage the right amount of fun and difficulty. 3d Platformers don't need to do everything 2d platformers can do to be successful as a genre, you just need to make it stand on its own as a great game. And really, I play a lot of 3d platformers where you don't have to adjust the camera once.

So, really it could go either way for me really. I've never played the 3DS, but going off of the hype about it, I assume it works, so maybe 3d will be the option.

yo ai just because ~~~you don't like them~~~ doesn't mean they are lacking in platforming.

YouTube - Super Mario Galaxy - Luigi's Purple Coins < NOT platforming.

...You do realize that's incredibly slow and clumsy, with no varying height and practically an overhead camera right? It's basically 2D top-down. Literally nothing that couldn't have been done more or less on the NES in level design.

Am I the only person that never had trouble with Luigi's Purple Coins? It only took me about 2 tries, tops.

Awesome argument, everything I've ever said is totally disproven.

Did I fail to mention that "collect this many of this thing with a numeric value in a time limit" sequences are rubbish? Or that the environment is abstract and disembodied from the main portion of the gameplay? Pfff

Does every game have to be playable with the 3D turned off? I wonder what sort of innovation you can have with 3D when it's necessary that players be able to beat the game without it.

I was wondering that myself. I think most 3D gameplay styles would be playable in 2D mode, though games which are dependent on strong distance judgement will probably be less enjoyable in 2D.

That stage was supposed to look flat, because there's green lava and disappearing platforms.

Also, if I wanted to, I could look for every instance of bad 2d Platforming design and say "UGLY AS FUKC" and be like a complete dumbass but that would be just be silly since it's all just aesthetics. It's one thing to look at game-play, and another to experience it. The level is actually very hectic as you have to get 100 purple coins and get back to the starting point without taking away too many platforms that would deem it impossible.

It's actually alot more nerve-wracking than what you get from most 2d platformers anyway. Well, most.
