I disagree strongly that SMW was just a technological upgrade from SMB3 - at the very least, it was as much of a change as SMB3 was from SMB.

I noticed that in his list, he forgot many games. Yoshi Story is unargueably the worst Mario game I ever played.

I of course didn't count spin-offs, RPGs, or party games. Just the main action series.

SMW was indeed one of the best-selling games on the SNES, but a lot of people considered it 'disappointing' after SMB3. It was also one of the lower-selling games in the Mario series.

Just remember. Lowest-selling Mario title is like saying 'weakest atom bomb.'

Dude.. no offense, but could you be more wrong? SMW was the 3rd best selling Mario game of all time... what are you talking about?

1. SMB - 40 million
2. SMB3 - 18 million
3. SMW - 17 million

Source - Nintendoland, which sites like Gamespy have said is accurate.
