Luigi's Mansion 2

Luigi's Mansion 2 Emerges on 3DS

Quote:

Luigi's Mansion is making a comeback on 3DS with Luigi's Mansion 2, Nintendo announced at its E3 media briefing this morning.

It's not a "simple revision" in the words of Reggie Fils-Aime. It's an entirely new game that takes advantage of 3D and offers "several new mansions." A brief demo was shown with Luigi wandering around a mansion and doing some old fashioned ghostbusting.
Check one off my wishlist.

YES. I love Luigi's Mansion. Am I wearing Nostalgia Goggles? Maybe, but Nintendo made this for people like me.

I've wanted Luigi's Mansion 2 for awhile but the trailer didn't do too much for me.

I have no doubt it will improve though.

Luigi's Mansion 2 Preview for Nintendo 3DS from 1UP.com

Quote:
I never played the original Luigi's Mansion (never had a Gamecube) but was intrigued by the brief presentation of Luigi's Mansion 2 at Nintendo's E3 conference to make it my first kiosk stop in order to get my hands on the game.

This game will be a "true sequel" to the original that if memory serves right, didn't review all that well. Perhaps this was a case of reviewers wanting a game with more platforming elements or hating on a launch title. Regardless, the game itself was well-regarded among fans who appreciated a new approach to a "Mario" game and it appears that little has changed in the overall design some 10 years later. Instead of going for something "new," this game looks to continue the legacy of the original.

The short haunted mansion level I played today looks to keep many of these traits intact. While it wasn't made clear how Luigi found himself traversing another haunted mansion, he still has his trusty Poltergeust 3000 vacuum cleaner along with a high-powered flashlight, both of which are still used to stun and capture ghosts that are hidden throughout the mansion. Mainstays like finding keys in chests to unlock other doors along with coin collecting elements will return as well. From my understanding by talking to others who have played the original, the mechanics all seem to be the same. That leaves the design of the additional mansions and enemies that much more important to keep the player engaged and not feeling like they're performing the same actions again, and again.

The 3DS version also looks to continue many of the artistic stylings from the original and the system itself does an excellent job with the shadows, lighting, and reflections to give a lot of life to these levels. The 3D effect is also very well done. Considering the game moves at a slow pace I never found myself trying to refocus my eyes and was able to track everything relatively well. Beyond the 3D effect you can also use the systems gyro senor to look around the levels as well as assisting the player in trapping ghosts.

It's a little early to be too critical of the game just yet; it's not set to be released until 2012. Being someone who never played the original, I can appreciate this approach to a franchise that feels "new" to me. For those who played the original to death will have to wait for further details to see how much it differentiates itself.
Also, SCREENSHOTS:

Level design looks a lot more interesting than the first game. Never could understood why they rushed it so much, it could've been really cool.

High jumps galore.

Cool game, but I'm still waiting for a Luigi platformer.

As cool as this and Super Mario 3D Land could be, I don't see the point in doing full 3D games on hand helps, the Full 3D when I do actually want to play them the appeal is being fully immersed in the Game's world, you cant' really do that on a Hand Held.

I feel the Hand Helps should remain focused on being where idl still Side Scrolling games are still alive.

Here's about 15 minutes of gameplay, taken by a camera. Don't be like this player: listen to E Gadd.

I hope it is more challenging than the first one. It's entertaining, sure, but I beat the thing in one sitting in a rental. And when you play it again, there isn't much to do but treasure hunt more thoroughly.

[Insert eyeroll here]

It took him nearly three minutes to catch one ghost?

This game must be hard as crap.
