I never got that, really. I hate TV for the most part, books are grindingly boring usually and I just can't listen to music for more than 5 minutes. What's left to do while everyone else watches some retarded sitcom like Just Shoot Me? Just join the mindlessly poor writing and rot mah brain? |

Mainstream TV for example is awful and books are always suited to personal taste so other people's opinion's on them matter very little. Most of the time the popular games that actually have a story have a great one. Look at the Hollywood snatching up game properties (albeit ruining the idea in the translation to movies) like there's no tomorrow. |

Mainstream tv is awful, and mainstream gaming isn't? Books are "suited to personal tastes"? Here's a bit of a reality check - despite pushes in the medium gaming is no more an art form than any of the latter listed above, and if anything its merely a hybrid of artistic mediums in cinema, music, and litterature combined with an advanced version of checkers or any other 'game'. I'll bite for cinematic masterpieces such as SOTC and intricately plot-structured games like RPGs, but you're sitting here and saying Call of Duty 4 is that ****ing great you can dismiss the three mediums which pretty much make up our cultural heritage? Here's a ****ing pro-tip. COD4 is retarded. So is Halo. Both are mediocre yet popular excerpts in a genre which has already displayed their combined feats in the past in obscurity and which still refuse to surpass limitations since the ****ing DOOM era. Are they fun? Of course they're fun! They're games, dammit! |

Really, you may like a biography and I may not stand them or maybe I just don't like the one you picked or I flat out just may hate the person on which it is based. It is easier to enjoy something like video games in a broader range of different kinds of people. My point is, books are too limited and linear stories often disappoint. I am currently reading some cheesey fantasy novel "Dragon Weather" and I already am on chapter 15 and I guessed every plot point accurately till where I am. Books are not superior to gaming in any fashion just cause they've been around for a much longer period of time. And yes, mainstream TV does ****ing suck balls. And sure games are a hybrid of all other kinds of art forms but the gameplay itself is the innovation while perfecting each of the other "hybrid" arts it is compiled of. BTW, I have to agree Halo is retarded...sorry, as much as I may even refrence to it almost being made a movie and it having novels based on it, the damn story is awful, the music is just off and the gameplay is not even very good. Don't wanna piss off the Halo fans but it just goes to show, Halo is retarded but so are many other forms of media. Eminem and his sensless rantings are retarded, to many books to name are retarded and movies speak for themselves. I just think video games deserve a lot of respect in their current form. They're comparitively young and thriving and are still to be perfected, to try to shoot down a budding art form is just wrong. |

QUOTE] I'm going to state for the record that no, books aren't suited to personal taste, that is why we have genres that are. That is why there are genres in gaming as well. I'm going to follow up by stating that a) books do not at all have to be linear, and you clearly have little knowledge in the medium - try taking some advanced litterature classes, go post-modernist and have all the fun in the world with Robert Kroetsch and the like, and b) the fact that you are reading a cheesy dimestore fantasy novel kind of stresses that. |

As for books a great deal of them are rather drivitive true but when a true masterpeice is published it is going to stand the test of time. The writen word has a power all its own a power that has the ability to resinate on an incredibly level. Just think how diffrent things would be today if the Libary of Alexandria had not been distroyed. Now if you'll excuess me I'm going to go play a few games of teris before I go on a rather incomprehencible rant about the burning of books. - You stupid dog! |
