well he's an assist trophy in brawl and he apparantly sucks enough that he didn't make it as a playable character bud doesn't suck so bad that he's excluded outright. take a look here

so I guess his current status is "meh."

The problem is not only was he introduced in, of all things, a SPORTS game (which is not the place to introduce characters of this caliber), but he has yet to be in a REAL, canon Mario game, or a real canon game of any kind. The fact that he has such a stupid name is mere icing on the cake. -CSM
