People who piss their pants over spelling mistakes

Oh, so I left out an e? Don't waste your time telling me about it: no one gives a crap. The other day, a teacher made a mistake and was fixing it, when a student cried out, "YOU MADE A MISTAKE!" Talk about annoying. :\

It's just as annoying on the internet.

While I am not a Grammar Nazi (I prefer to think of myself as more of a Grammar Socialist), I do tend to call people out on their errors.

For instance, your sentence should have a comma in it, Nobody.

{Yes, it is annoying when it was an obvious typo/writing error.}

YOU SPEEK BAD ENGLEESH!1!

I suddenly remember when two or so n00bs yelled about how they were "Grammer Jews", which probably means...."Too stupid to type Correctly"

But, Anyway.....

No one likes it when someone antagonizes them for thier spelling....

That's why we keep doing it.

I don't do the whole 'spelling/grammar stickler' thing here at VGF, and it gives me a pain in the ass when I see other people doing it. It's anal and it's mean-spirited--screw that crap.

Oh, if you want to be possessive,
It's just I-T-S,
But if you want to use a contraction,
Then it's I-T-apostrophe-S!
....Scalawag.

There's a proper context for everything. VGF isn't the ideal place to be a grammatical nit-pick; it derails discussion and frightens away new members. I'm not saying you're wrong to have standards; I'm saying it's wrong to treat people like crap because they're more interested in having a good time than engaging in grammatical pissing contests.

Huh, this is one of the few cases in which I'm not the person holding the 'stuck-up' belief.

I don't care how badly you mangle your English, my brain is set to auto-correct what I see so it pleases me. So, by all means, speak in garbled txt-speak if it pleases you.

Look, let me explain something about group dynamics in general and geek psychology in particular. Every group develops little markers that let members know if someone is a part of the group. Particular ways of speaking, writing, or acting, little jokes, that sort of thing.

Many geeks grew up as outsiders. We were smarter, but lacked social skills. Dumber but more popular people felt threatened by our brains and put us down, picked on us, and so forth. One characteristic that groups of those dumber people adopted as their group marker was a disdain for all things intellectual. One thing many geeks have adopted is just the opposite, a respect for all things intellectual, to distinguish ourselves from them.

Do you see where this is going?

You come on a geek message board spouting anti-intellectualism, "Oh, you dorks, proper spelling and grammar don't matter. Get over yourselves." You have just identified yourself as "one of them," an outsider, probably anti-intellectual, most likely of the same sort that picked on many of us as kids.

Proper spelling and grammar are one of our shibboleths, along with Natalie Portman, hot grits, and Beowulf clusters. It isn't primarily about communication, although that is a factor. It is about identity. We are geeks. Geeks are smart. Smart people spell words correctly and use proper grammar. That is who we are.

When people here correct your spelling or grammar, they are really just trying to carry on our culture, and help you fit in. You don't have to, but if you don't, you will be seen as an outsider by many here. That's just how it is with people. You know the old saying, "When in Rome..."

Yeah. I'm not buying it, Ace. I'm not anti-intellectual; I'm anti-snob. I don't think people are necessarily smarter for having a better grasp of the rules of grammar and spelling, any more than I think my mom's smarter than me for being a better driver. It's a skill set, and I'm not the kind of self-unaware dink who thinks he's better than others for having more skill in a particular area than others.

And please, please don't try and pass off that some self-styled Grammar Nazi is trying to nudge a newbie towards greater verbal clarity and sophistication of expression when he says, 'Learn how to spell, jackpipe', because I'm not buying that one, either.
