| VGF's Resident Lennonist | U.S. Imperialism in the Film Industry In order to preserve their national cinemas from being stamped out by Hollywood, many countries employ screen quotas so that their films get a chance to shine. Getting rid of these quotas can have disastrous results. For example, when the US pressured Mexico to get rid of their screen quotas, local production dropped from 100 films per year to 4. 4 ****ing films. Now the US has placed a great deal of pressure on South Korea, a country who has been producing the best films in the world for most of the past decade, to get rid of the screening quotas so more Hollywood garbage can be shown there. Thankfully, the quotas weren't gotten rid of completely, however, they were reduced from 146 to 73 days. So far, this has had very little effect on the Korean film industry, as the local product is still outperforming the Hollywood films being imported, but who knows how long this will last? (FYI, South Korea is one of the very few countries in the world where local cinema outperforms Hollywood.) |

| VGF's Resident Lennonist | A good starting point is the Vengeance trilogy, which consists of Sympathy for Mr. Violence, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance. The latter ranks number one on my list of the top films of the past decade. Other great Korean films of the past decade would include: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring My Sassy Girl (Yes it's a romantic comedy, but it's amazingness) 3-Iron Oasis Peppermint Candy A Bittersweet Life Joint Security Area I'm a Cyborg - But that's Okay Musa (released in the US as The Warrior) The Host (actually got a wide release in the US) A Tale of Two Sisters A lot of people seem to like Shiri but I have yet to watch it. |
