Alcohol and the "Drinking culture"

Yeah I'm definitely deciding that I'm not drinking when I'm legal...."Real" wine is supposed to be worth it but I'm not shelling out money on something that tastes like rancid fruit juice when I can buy a video game using Australian Prices and have way more fun with it. Or upgrade my computer. Or hell, get a Vegas Buffet. If I'm spending money on something that has me retching and dry-heaving with the aftertaste alone then it'd better taste good going down. I can get a liter of soda or sweet tea for just $1.50.

I'm definitely not touching beer or vodka - I've toured a Brewery with Summer camp. I know what it's made from and what it smells like. And I know what it looks like without coloured bottles. No thank you. I'm definitely not drinking something that looks like someone peed in the mug.

The whole drinking culture bothers me as well. Not only do you have to binge drink and then throw it all up (which kind of defeats the purpose of drinking in my opinion) and then you get made fun of by the "Real" drinkers who mock you for daring to drink stuff that doesn't taste like utter ****. You are uncultured if you don't like wine or would rather buy a liter of Tea for a buck and a half than spend $70 USD on a bottle of wine.

So to the drinking culture, both "Culture" and "Binge drinking", I say this....SCREW YOU. I'll be over here with the designated drivers drinking the stuff we won't regret cause it won't give us a hangover or make us feel nauseous.

I hate it when people drink for the sake of getting drunk. But drinking because you enjoy the taste of what you're drinking is completely different; there are a variety of different alcoholic beverages that taste delicious. I don't begrudge people for drinking what they like because it's like a treat to them (as would be say a dessert of some sort - heck I do it). It's all a matter of being smart while you drink.

Thanks, Doug, you just insulted everyone who's in a chemical dependency unit as well as all AA members. I hope you're proud of being an *******.

^Er, no. I agree with the point he's making, that this culture glorifies drinking in a manner that's completely stupid.

You need to chill.

Fair enough, counter post time.

Heres what I'm gonna say; Binge drinking is a problem, yes. But since you don't does it really concern you?

^I'd say you could argue that yes, even if you don't do it, you can be affected by it.

Doesn't sound like he is really, he just seems to be bitching.

If he is though, I withdraw my statement.

Well, it seems like he's talking about being belittled because he doesn't take part in those activities. I'd say that anyone who's giving another person a hard time because they choose to not drink has the right to be annoyed.

So? We have a choice to drink. I don't have anything against people who drink responsibly so long as they don't say "omg you don't drink you're uncultured scum". Yeah how about I were to say "omg you drink you like to rape your liver"? Because you know Red Wine is actually supposed to be healthy in the right amount.

I'm a social alcoholic.

When I'm by myself or with somebody who doesn't drink, I drink very little if at all. For instance, I might have a Margarita if I'm at a Mexican restaurant or a beer at my apartment to go along with my pizza but that's all.

When I'm with one of my alcohol-loving friends, though, I get drunk just for the sake of being sociable. Fortunately, I seldom hang around with these kinds of people.

I've never found an alcoholic drink I really liked the taste of.

I've always been under the impression that getting drunk is the point of alcohol.

^You must not have looked very hard then. There are plenty of drinks that don't even taste alcoholic.

I wouldn't say getting 'drunk' is the point. Alcohol does make you feel good (well, every person is different), but the sensation of getting slightly buzzed is a pleasant one for many people. Rip-roaring drunk is a different story, however.

I likes me the tasty drinks and get mocked for it. Some people become angry at me for not drinking vodka straight. I hate that aspect of social drinking.
