It's a staple of theater and stand-up comedy, but people seem to do it all the time in a much smaller scale in everyday conversation when they relate to other people, parroting things they've said (as well as things they would say) while mimicking their manner of speech. It's often subject to horrible misquoting, blatant stereotyping, and overdramatic tones, which obviously sets this figure of speech apart from normal quoting. Example: "So he was all like, 'I didn't do that; it was his fault!'" People seem likely to deliver the quotation in a generally moronic-sounding tone when they disagree with the point despite the fact the person who said it projected a tone of self-assurance. This is sometimes accompanied by the speaker's retort, which contrasts itself from the other person by their condescending inflection. It's just something I've seen damn near everybody do, and I can't help but wonder why people skew the perspectives of others like this. ...On second thought, don't answer that. |
