Conic Sections

Seriously, who cares about these? I didn't care about them last year and I don't care about them any more now that we are re-learning them this year.

After all I am going to need to know the equation of a hyperbola for the REST OF MY LIFE, rite. Supar important stuff here.

I never saw the use in these, and for some reason they refused to make sense to me. I'm just as uncaring and confused as I was last year. Re-teaching them isn't helping, it's just pissing us all off. x{D

I CARE ABOUT CONIC SECTIONS.

Precalc? Are you a junior/senior already?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Hyperbolas, parabolas, ellipses, circles.

Never cared about them, and somehow my brain decided to never learn about them either.

They're pointless and they refuse to stay in my head and they are stupid and I don't like them. D}:<

I never had a problem with Conic Sections. I always thought Hyperbolas were freakin' cool.

We never learnt conic sections, but I think that's because geometry tended to be reserved for the lower-intensity math streams.

I totally thought this said 'comic sections', like the newspaper funnies, and I was going to agree whole-heartedly. Most current comic strips are terrible.

I got all the way through Calc II in high school. Haven't used anything more complex than Algebra I since.

Also, I am a film studies major. Go figure.

Also, I typed this entire post with one hand. It's probably taking me 3-4x as long because of it.

I'm not even doing anything with the other hand that would prevent me from typing with it. This is pointless.

I just learned a secret with Centroids in Calc II which makes mincemeat of Conic Sections. Mwa ha ha haaaa.

^^Did your high school require Calc 2? 'Cause (a) they shouldn't have, & (b) if you chose to take it, you don't really have a lot of room to complain.

Conics are alg 2 or precalc, not geometry.

And lines. Yup, straight lines are conic sections also.

^ I'm not complaining about Calc II. I'm just saying that I haven't used it at all.

I just honestly don't see the point in LOOK AT THESE CURVY LINESSSS now here's an equation that's not in standard form GRAPH IT BECAUSE THIS IS THE MOST USEFUL THING EVAR CAPS LOCK FTW.

Really? I don't see how they apply to Geometry, since they pretty much specifically represent equations.

I learned them in Algebra II then Precalc.

I found them equally useless both times. :{P

Just wait till Calculus 3. You'll be dealing with 3D shapes: Spheres, Ellipsoids, Hyperboloids, Paraboloids, Cones, Toroids, and Solinoids. And you'd be surprised at the hyperbolic applications. -CSM
