Everyone acts like Twilight and everything related to it is so awesome. Even McDonald's at one point. And Burger King right now. When, really, it's a pile of crap. |

I mean, seriously? Has the popularity of those things risen just because of some stupid series that features those as the main characters? |

Not saying it isn't awful in general, but seems like people go pretty far out of their way to bitch about something they don't need to be involved with. I find the existence of it in general to be an ultimately hilarious example of how absurd it is that we accept the replacement of original works with the palest imitations. Then again, everyone acts like I'm strange for not watching television or listening to radio. All utter ****, though. Most "creative" people don't even seem to understand that they're creating plagiaristic, stereotypical tripe with no respect for what's been accomplished by the world at large. Hence, crap like Twilight. The immense lack of culture apparent in Western society is a void that has been filled with senseless consumerism. What's old is new, and not because anyone sees any merit in retelling it. They can make a buck, and we should respect that, because it's what makes capitalism so ****ing great, right? Right. Way to go. They actually made "octopuses" a word. Vampires aren't a genre theme. There are persons to whom it has never occurred that there was a first writer to address the subject of Vampires. Seriously, these books are silly. Hasn't any of their readers heard of the Wheel of Time? Or any one of the millions of other great books that coincidentally have vampire-like beings in them somewhere, and those beings happen to actually be threatening? Alternatively, there's plenty of mushy romance novels out there, if they must snoo snoo with vampires. ![]() |

Epic Ladynerd Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Forteresse de Valois Gender: Posts: 28,504 Thanks: 1,658 Thanked 1,820 Times in 1,042 Posts | Still definitely not the worst books I've ever read. In fact, not even close to the worst. If any of you want to read them before acquiring an opinion, then I could have a reasonable discussion with someone for a change. ![]() Regardless. It's all about the inappropriate labeling from everyone and their mother. Twilight is absolutely, 100% a romance story. Paranormal romance isn't new, but marketing it towards a younger audience is. Romance was a genre that was dominated by adult stories, focusing entirely on adult scenarios (like work and ****, not OH HO ADULT SEX LOL). To re-brand the genre for the younger crowd, you had an untapped fanbase waiting for someone to cater towards them. Romance is worked into most other teen lit (or other teen media), but until recently, hasn't been a constant focus. And don't even start about how "broken" the relationship is. Edward is a vampire. Bella's ultimate goal is to become a vampire. If you can't fathom the significance of this, we really can't progress beyond here. As for the vampirisms, I've always vaguely wondered if the loudest complainers are actually aware of the history of the legends. Yes, sparkling was pretty much one of the worst possible descriptions I could imagine for why they must avoid the light. However, I can understand what Meyer was going for; sparkling wasn't right on the mark (a simple pearlescence would have been much more appropriate, considering their skin tone). Melting/dying in sunlight wasn't part of traditional vampire legend until the film Nosferatu, which entirely made it up. But now, that is part of the standard "qualities" of vampires today. My point here being that fictionalising characteristics of fictional creatures has been done throughout history, and while we can all agree Meyer went down the failroad of sparkling, she hasn't somehow desecrated vampires by making changes of her own. "Fanfiction" applies to every story made today. It's all been done, children. Get over it. Pixar haven't made anything that is original and unique, but that doesn't stop the masses fawning over their films. ![]() Twilight is part of "high fantasy". It's accessible. Completely accessible. People romaticise love, dangerous situations, and having exciting lives all the time. Then the average level of reading comprehension is grade 9. These books are the ultimate "anyone can read it". Therein lies their success. And guess what? They weren't written for you. You are not the target audience. You're not expected to like it, just like you're not expected to like Sesame Street, or lawn bowls and bingo. Once you've squared with that, you can approach these forms of entertainment with a much more ambivalent attitude, because you can accept that they aren't designed to appeal to you. It's for someone else. |
