Aww man, all the cool stuff is happening while I'm at work. I guess I can always catch them on Youtube later.

The VOD thread on Reddit is my personal recommendation of where to go for recordings. Everything gets updated really fast, and it's very well laid-out.

Definitely inviting myself over to a friend's Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday night after work. He has a widescreen TV and I want to see the SMS, TTYD, and the DKC games.

Speedrunning is the only spectator sport worth my time.

Anyone else catch the SMS race?? That was so good. One of my favorite speed games, and despite a huge disparity at the beginning the end was really close and exciting.

(Also shoutout to StrongManLin, apparently he covered for someone who dropped out on like 3 hours' notice.)

^That race was excellent, I got to see most of it. Great commentary and a great, close race.

What would be a good game for my first speedrun?

^ A game you don't mind playing literal thousands of times, and a game you're willing to watch other people speedrun to learn from their strategies. I find it's easier to get into a speedgame if you enjoy the community who plays that game already because you can ask them for advice. (One of the biggest reasons I'm more inclined to try LM or SMS over Sonic Adventure DX is the community.)

^Unless the game's too obscure to have a speedrunning community, in which case, congratulations! You're the sole innovator for that game!

The Sonic community is pretty terrible.

The Sonic speedrun community seems pretty chill from what I've seen.

For you I'd say SMK because you've already been playing that game a lot. I think Super Metroid is a pretty easy game to casually speedrun myself.

^^as X-3 said, Sonic community =/= Sonic speedrunning community

Super Mario Kart is probably your best bet, since you love it. Have you checked out the global leaderboards? I forget the URL, but they talked about it several times during its AGDQ spot.

If you'd like to do another game (platformer/RPG/whatever), I'd echo what CL says: Pick a game that has personal infinite replay value for you. A game that you won't mind playing thousands of times over and over again. And, for your first speed game, I'd recommend finding a game with a well-established community so you can get involved. A lot of games have Discord channels and some even have dedicated forums.

I know some speedrunners and have some connections to that community, so let us know what game you pick and we VGF folks can probably help locate the community hubs for it.

The Sonic speedrun community overall is pretty damn great but for some reason SADX runners possess less chill than the communities for most other Sonic titles. Alas..

    ---

^ I don't have time to look into it atm but looking on speedrun.com leaderboards can show you who has run the game, and you can look for them on twitch and YouTube from there. Or just YouTube search "spyro 2 speedrun" and check out what comes up, that's always a safe start.

    Here's the Spyro 2 Leaderboards

Looks like the Guide section is pretty full on the left, and there's a forum there, though I'm not sure how active it is. I'm sure they have a Discord channel as well. And, of course, follow the guys on Twitch and I'm sure they have resources on their channels.

Just remember to take it piece by piece. Don't expect to incorporate the harder tricks and glitches into runs right off the bat, start with what you can do even if it's drastically slower. Take some time to practice individual sections and try to optimize as best you can.
